Bags

We don’t like our films and tapes to be bagged (unless it’s the BagIt System for digital transfer). Some donations come to us with items in bags and those bags have protected the materials inside a tape box, for example, from getting very dusty wherever they were stored. That can be good, right? Yes, sometimes. But the plastic breaks down over time and becomes sticky, or hard, or breaks down into tiny bits that go everywhere. Film or tape kept in plastic just increases the ongoing degradation and offgassing of acetic acid inside the container to stay inside, thus, further breaking down the film or tape, and more rapidly aging it.

Today turned into a day of bags and their removal. This is why it can be so slow to process a/v collections. Even when we do our best to work at the MPLP level, we also have to do the right thing by the materials.

Bags from around audiotape reels inside boxes. About 30 of them so far from a donation of about 1000 tapes.

And, ugh: Photoguard bags on films. Three of them today. I’ve blogged about these film coatings before. I am not convinced they were so great in the long run, though they did help protect against scratches in heavily-used, circulating prints, which is what they were intended for. Henry Wilheim devotes a chapter (#4) in The Permanence and Care of Color Photographs (get your free PDF here) to Photoguard and other lacquers on both photographic prints and motion picture film.

This unopened tape is pretty nifty. New Old Stock, as it were. Maybe it will go on the “museum” shelf in the lab. I’m not sure if the tape stock would be worth using since it’s been sealed all these years (probably since the 1980s).
