Outlander Fanfic Relay #11

“Jamie! You’re bleeding.”

“What?”

His eye followed hers to his left side, where she was frantically pressing her hand to apply pressure to a wound he hadn’t even felt happen. She seemed so genuinely panicked that it set his heart racing, but he knew deep down that he was okay.

“Claire, move your hand.”

“I have to apply pressure and stop the bleeding! How did this happen? Why did you not mention you were hurt?”

“Please, do as I say. Move your hand.”

With great reluctance, she peeled her hand away. Beneath her palm was an expanse of white cotton undershirt, undamaged and clean.

“But, I saw it!” Claire gasped, still staring at the spot on Jamie’s side as though it would suddenly change. “I smelt it, I touched your blood. It was real.”

“The other times, it felt t’was all a dream, no?”

Claire sat up abruptly, still saying close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating from his skin, but giving herself some space to process everything that had been happening to her over the last few days.

“It was truly ethereal.”

“Do you believe in the multiverse, Claire?”

“I believe in science. I believe in proven facts and evidence. I’m not even sure I know what you’re asking,” she admitted, allowing him to draw her close with one arm around her shoulders.

He spoke softly, as though he was afraid to be overheard, which made Claire focus on the treble of his voice, the way his Scottish accent became less pronounced the more effort he put into being understood.

“I have this feeling, deep down, that you and I are living another life somewhere else.”

“Reincarnation?” she asked with extreme skepticism.

“No,” he said, pausing to find the best words to explain himself. “The multiverse theories all stem from the idea that we all live an infinite number of realities in parallel universes simultaneously and if we could travel between them, we may meet our alter ego. I dinna believe that you and I are bound by some shared past that we are somehow recollecting. I believe we’re seeing the present…somewhere else.”

Claire laughed nervously, unsure of whether he genuinely believed it or it was one of the many stories Jamie was known for telling at the hospital. Part of her wondered if what he was describing explained the meaning of the stones she’d seen in her vision, or if it was only the Woman of Balnain tale that Jamie had told playing an influence on her dreams.

“I don’t know what to think.”

“Hear me out, please. ‘Tis why you could smell the blood, why you were dreaming whilst awake - this isna a memory. These things we’re experiencing…they’re happening to us in the present.”

“If it’s true, and I’m not entirely convinced it even could be,” she said, giving him the benefit of the doubt for the moment. “What do we do about it?”
