I love everything about this sequence. Bai Yutong’s impulsiveness really comes out to play here. He wants Zhan Yao to come with him and greet his sister, but Zhan Yao is like “Nah, boo, there’s no way!” (if you need proof, I GIFed that part too, but I figured better to get to the meat of the matter here 😏)
Anyway, so Zhan Yao is like “NOPE!” and Bai Yutong, meatball of physicality that he is, is like “Haha! That’s what YOU think!” And proceeds to handcuff them together and pull his bae along behind him like the most reluctant caboose to greet his terrifying sister it makes me wonder when else this comes in handy for them. I love the little moment there where Bai Yutong motions to Zhan Yao’s coat, like “Yes, I’m forcing you to come with me, but I don’t want you to get cold, boo, so dress warm!”
The camera shot that follows, of Bai Yutong charging forward with all that energy (look at him, his pants can hardly contain his legs!) and Zhan Yao being pulled along behind him, coat barely in his fingertips. You can clearly see Zhan Yao’s slighter build here, he’s clearly the esteemed and accomplished brainiac while Bai Yutong was the military airforce pilot. Zhan Yao can barely keep up when he is quite literally attached at the wrist to this warm blooded, impulsive locomotive.
Of course I had to add their underlings’ reactions to the shot, because it’s hilarious. There’s quite a bit of it that I cut out for efficiency, but to summarize they’re so shooketh they drop the snacks and stare on in shock, it’s just hilarious!!
Then the last shot just gives me a bit of SQUEEEE. Our poor Zhan Yao is still gasping from the run when Bai Yutong shoves him into a spare office to avoid his sister. “If I die, you’re going with me.” It’s even more adorable since they’ve known each other since they were kids, and it makes me imagine something like this probably also happened way back when: One of them gets in trouble and physically drags the other in with him.
It’s at places like this that I see one of the reasons for Zhan Yao’s attraction to Bai Yutong. They both deal with crime and the excitement that comes with cases, but Bai Yutong brings a new, visceral kind of excitement to Zhan Yao’s life--a physical, living in the moment with your whole body thrill, that Zhan Yao, a psychologist who often lives in his own head, would otherwise completely miss.
