3. “I can’t stop thinking about you.”

“I can’t stop thinking about you.” James looked away from Julia, his expression unreadable. His tone was charged and raw with emotion, the slight rasp in his voice more pronounced.

Julia’s heart thudded in her chest, and she could swear it skipped a beat. The soft look in his eyes that had replaced the usually intense spark, the small frown instead of a cocky smirk. If it meant what she thought it meant- what she hoped it meant-

“You’re magical, y’know?” The curious lilt to his voice was almost sarcastic. James shook his head, turning around and facing the stained glass window depicting a pink rose. 

“You’re more than magical.” His rasping voice deepened, and he looked up at the window, the black hood of his cloak falling to his shoulders. “You’re beautiful. You’re kind. You’re perfect.”

His voice cracked at the last word, and his shoulders hunched, his head dropping as he stared at the floor. 

Julia was speechless. She had dreamed of a moment like this- always with a prince charming, some dashing wizard who could sweep her off her feet and offer her a rose more beautiful than any she’d ever seen. 

Not this, though. Not a heartfelt confession right before a dangerous quest. Not a rebellious boy known for his ‘no feelings involved’ policy with his hookups. No someone she only met months ago. 

“It feels like every moment- every thought- is about you. I never thought it’d be this way. This intense…” The last words trailed off, and James continued to talk. “I can’t help it, can’t stop myself. And I’m used to that, just not about… feelings.” 

He seemed to almost flinch at the last word, and he sighed. 

“You don’t make it easy. You’re the perfect girl, the best. The small things, they’re what made me fall for you. The way you apply makeup like it’s warpaint, the way you braid your hair, your smile, your laugh. I can’t believe no one has noticed all of your beauty.”

There’s a long pause. Neither of them speak, and Julia didn’t know if it was from fear or something else.

Another moment passes, and James’ head snapped up, staring out at the window. His shoulders straightened, but tensed like a bowstring about to snap. 

The silence filled the room. Julia’s heart raced, her hands trembling at her sides as she internally panicked.

“Well? Aren’t you going to say something?” His voice was sharp and rough and hurt. Julia flinched, her sharp intake of breath audible. 

“James.” She stepped forward, her hand reaching out. Her hand rested on his shoulder, and it was like all the tension drained out in an instant as he relaxed. “Look at me.” 

James turned slowly, the cape of his black cloak flaring out slightly, the golden accents catching the sun’s light. Her hand shifted, remaining on his shoulder as he faced her.

Julia couldn’t help but stare. His hair glowed with an almost halo-like aura from the window’s light. His dark brown hair was illuminated in a way where she could see individual strands, hints of amber and honey and gold. His eyes were bloodshot, and she couldn’t help but feel a surge of protectiveness for him. His cheeks were flushed, his lips worn to a dark pink. 

“I think you’re charming.” She started, her words slower than his anxious ramble, trying to be exact and sure. “You are handsome, and independent, intelligent, strong…” She trailed off for a moment, biting her lip.

She tilted her head up to look him in the eyes. “I-I can’t stop thinking about you either.” She admitted, sighing in relief after she said it. 

One of his hands moved up slowly, then covered her hand on his shoulder. Taking the initiative, she moved her free hand up and around his neck, bending him down slightly.

He met her halfway.

When their lips met, it was like Julia had spent her entire life in a frozen tundra, and was suddenly feeling sunlight for the first time. Her cheeks warmed, and she tilted her head slightly, the new angle sending sparks throughout her body. James’ hand cupped her jaw, and she could feel him smirking into the kiss.

When they broke apart, her gaze met his, and his smirk only widened. She raised an eyebrow and licked her lips in response, grinning at how his breathing hitched. 

“…So I take it we’re dating?” James muttered.

“Maybe we should test it again, just to be sure.” Julia teased, leaning in for another kiss.
