InkWizTober Day Twenty-Seven: Coat + Desert

Welcome to day twenty-seven of inktober! (totally not the thirty-first, not Halloween, hahah... I’ll just keep posting daily after this.) I wrote about my friend @dunestriders‘s oc Amirah! Moon wiz from Mirage with two adorable lesbian moms,,,, she has my whole ass heart. Only warnings are just kinda, mild homesickness, frostbite mention, and swearing.

Amirah’s first winter in Wizard City was truly the worst experience of her entire life.

Sneezing again, she rubbed her freezing hands up and down the insides of her arms, trying to stay warm whilst listening to the ending summary of Professor Greyrose’s lecture. The hour long speech about strategy and using the environment to one’s advantage in battle was interesting in concept, but not in practice when Amirah desperately wanted to burrow back into the pile of blankets on her bed back in her dorm.

The goosebumps were an almost alarming sight on the warm tones of her brown skin. Having grown up in Mirage, a desert world where even at night the temperatures never got cold enough for snow of all things, Amirah was alarmed by the sudden cold snap of winter that had blanketed Ravenwood.

The slippery cobblestones, the forbiddingly sharp icicles on every eve, it seemed that the entire world had become even more foreign and frightening than it was before. The only people who seemed to share her opinion where the few manders and kroks from Krokotopia, most of whom were in her balance-focused classes. Though, they admitted, Krokotopia could be freezing around the magical ice pyramid near their balance classroom back home.

Sniffling again, Amirah neatly packed away the scrolls, quills, and books needed for class, scratching down the homework assignment before stuffing it into her bag. She needed to get back to her dorm as soon as possible. A nap in a warm cocoon of blankets sounded perfect.

She politely waited until most of the other advanced students of Ravenwood had left, though some more studious peers were loitering around Professor Greyrose’s desk, speaking with the fairy. Amirah walked out of the classroom, eyes flicking upwards automatically to register the now even longer icicles residing on the ice classroom’s eves. With a shake of her head, the movement slight and stuttered with stiffness, Amirah flexed her fingers and pulled up the hood of her cloak.

The dove grey garment was thinner than she’d likely need, but it was an old gift. She wasn’t going to let it go, and certainly didn’t feel like braving the cold in order to get a thicker replacement.

Amirah passed by the ice wizards who were going to the library, instead continuing to walk through the Commons of Wizard City to the dorms for miscellaneous students like her.

She wanted to keep her head down, maybe even pull up the eye and mouth covering of her cloak- from the days when it would be used to traverse sandstorms back home- but she was distracted by a commotion. Loud shrieks and shouts drew her gaze from the uneven cobblestones at her feet to the large Commons Pond, now frozen solid. A group of wizards in an array of school colors were gliding on the ice, some going in lazy circles, one attempting to jump and spin, and most chasing after each other in some dangerous game of tag. 

It looked... fun. Amirah had no doubt that if she were more outgoing she would join them, instead of being a standoffish loner who was silent to the point of rudeness. Even with her own introverted demeanor, she was sure if her moms were here to see this they’d want to do something cute and domestic, drag her with them to learn how to skate.

Huffing- and goodness, the puff of white air in front of her would always be a bit unexpected- Amirah continued walking, trying to maybe organize what assignments she should tackle after her nap. The shouts of playing wizards became background noise to her thoughts. 

Amirah blew a warm breath of air into her cupped palms, fingers brushing against her chapped lips and almost numb nose. She might have to actually look into getting a scarf and gloves. At this rate, she could lose body parts to frostbite, and that would be embarrassing. Amirah rubbed her palms together, sighing as she approached the dorm building’s door. 

That was when the snow started falling.

Soft, gentle, silent snowflakes began to drift down, and Amirah stopped dead. She had assumed in the night it had snowed, but now, right now, she was watching white flecks fall, hearing the crows of delight from the wizards skating on the pond, feeling the soft cold on her uncovered hands, one touching the cold metal doorknob. 

Snow! Real, cold, perfect, snow! Something that was abstracted to her- alien in the desert, where it was always warm, where snow and cold were only spoken about in jokes, myths, or ice magic. A thrill shook her, like a feather trailing down her spine, like soft, cold fingertips tapping at her hands. 

Letting her hand fall from the doorknob, Amirah settled on one of the benches outside, on the dorm building’s porch. She left her hands in her pockets for now, content to sit and watch the snow for a while, maybe see if any young wizards busted their asses on the frozen pond or icy stone paths. 

Now that would be fun.

She sat there peacefully, debating on how long she could sit on the wooden bench before she froze to it, when her fingers brushed against the embroidered words at the lip of the right pocket. 

Goodness, it had been so long since she wore this cloak, she almost forgot. Years ago, when she got this gift, her mothers excitingly told her about the messages they had left, hidden, all of them in neat Mirage script, all of them memorized by Amirah years ago.

The one on the inside, over her heart. ‘You always have a home with us’

The folds of the mouth cover, right under her chin. ‘Remember everyone has a different language they speak’

Many more, in perfect little stitches of thread. Her mothers’ names, both on the inside, one on each shoulder. Her own name in between them, right on the nape of her neck. How could she forget?

The one in her pocket was simple, as sweet as the rest. ‘You can weather any storm’

She remembered getting the gift, how enamored she was by the colorful thread hidden in the folds of grey cloth, how she was so in love with it, never took it off for months afterwards, the thing only still in one piece and fitting her because of enchantments.

It was simpler, when she was a child. She missed those years, where her world revolved around small things, a pretty antique in her mothers’ shop, a nice cloak, a new child moving in near her. When there was nothing but her moms, learning, and growing.

Her slim fingers trailed over the embroidered words, knuckles stiffer now that they were mostly exposed to the cold. 

She would head inside in a moment. Get some tea, probably get that nap. 

But maybe instead of homework afterwards, she would plan a trip home during winter break.

which school do you think is the one for those who don’t belong?

This is a kind-of continuation from this little fic/hc post. Hope you enjoy!

The wizard turns to you, shaking her head as she huffs out what might be a laugh. She looks away, through the large dirty warehouse windows, into the fading night, turned a quiet violet as dawn creeps forward.

“You think you don’t belong, kid?” 

“Maybe.” You say, words hesitant as regret encroaches, taking over your mind. 

She sighs and looks down at her nails, the cracked green of the paint becoming more and more chipped as she messes with them, fidgeting.

“Ravenwood isn’t perfect. I don’t wanna blow sunshine up your ass, kid. You aren’t five. Some of the teachers are shit and learning magic is hard- even harder when you start late. The headmaster definitely won’t be your friend, the Myth teacher might even be your enemy.” 

Morelle bites her lip, her fingers almost shaking as she impulsively chips more and more of her nail polish off. 

“There’s this new professor. Only showed up a few years ago, but he’s a good friend of mine. Real excited to teach, excellent with kids. He knows what it’s like to not belong, y’know? Grew up in a world where magic was seen as something frivolous, not worth the time. But he loves magic, loves his school.” 

She laughs- actually laughs. Her hands shake less. 

“Well, he doesn’t have a school- not in Wizard City. Don’t worry, I’ll take you to see Krokotopia after you’re enrolled. If you want to be enrolled.” 

You nod, a small smile spreading across your face.

“The school of Balance is for those who don’t belong, kid. I almost wish Arthur were around when I was a kid, because I would’ve had a hard time picking between Life and Balance. It’s a special school. They aren’t given a side to choose, elemental or spiritual. They don’t draw from within, don’t rely on what’s outside. They combine every part of the Spiral.” 

Morelle’s eyes are bright, full of emotion.

“If you don’t belong, even if you’re shit at magic, Balance will be a home for you.”

She holds out her hand, and on impulse, you grab it. She squeezes your hand, smiling. 

“Don’t worry kid. The school of Balance doesn’t belong either. They’ll understand.”

Day Twenty-Nine- Double

Welcome to day twenty-nine of inktober 2018! I just had to write about my twins. Warnings for violence, death (kinda), weapons, and blood mention.

There aren’t many who incur the wrath of the twins. Noah Dreamtamer and Haley Raintamer were timid kids, both awkward and too busy hanging out with each other to reach out to others.

Many hadn’t seen them in battle. After helping clear through Wizard City when they were both thirteen, it was easy to fade back into the background. Noah used his studies, Haley through inventing new gadgets.

Even when they were questing, it was just trolls and gobblers and ghosts, nothing hard. Most wizards were cowering in Ravenwood anyway at the time, no one knowing who saved the world. So now, many see their antisocial invisibility as weakness, and the twins decided that being underestimated was an advantage long ago.

Let it be known now, standing in the battle arena inside Bartleby, surrounded by the students of Ravenwood, their decision is going to be proven as the correct path.

They didn’t even speak, fighting in tandem against their opponent. Haley brought in clouds of grey fog crackling with purple lightning to surround them in a broad circle. She summoned creatures out of the depths occasionally to fight for them, each of them clawing their way out of the mist, drunk on magic and rage. Noah was the one to go forward and fight, something others wouldn’t expect him to do, but he liked fighting at his minion’s side, just so they didn’t die alone.

Noah dodged backwards, watching his cyclopes minion dissolve into clay and magic as the draconian man in front of him slashed his claws out, raking in a large crescent that left trails of silver sparks.

Feeling a surge of power behind him, Noah ducked, just in time for a wild bolt of lightning to slam into the dark blue dragon, pinning him to the ground. Noah whirled his staff in hand and jammed it into the soft parts of the draconian wizard’s natural armor, trying to get to the joints between the scales. 

He attacked viciously, but his face was blank. He wasn’t angry, not at this stupid wizard who ran his mouth, not at himself or Haley. Noah was just... bored, kinda. He could be studying right now. Or reading. Or doing homework. Literally anything else.

When the spell dispersed, Noah retreated back to Haley’s side. Haley nudged him with her shoulder, and he fell back further, hiding behind her at bit, his hand brushing against her back supportively.

It was their dragon opponent’s turn now. Students from the stands called his name, ‘Shale’ repeating over and over, a chant that had power to it, dozens of wizards united under one banner. Shale’s dark blue scales glittered and sparked as if in response, magic rolling off of him in visible waves. He stalked forward, prepared to strike at the twins, until-

He was tackled by a trio of ninja pigs. The three small creatures huffed as they wielded their swords and slashed at the snarling wizard, poofing in and out of existence as illusions, only to return in a blind spot to slash again. Noah huffed, grinning at Haley as he revealed the open clock face of his watch, a magically modified gift from Haley that now was empty of the shrunken card he had crafted.

“Your turn.” He said lowly, backing up and spinning his staff. His plain blue robes were floating gently, his entire body glowing with golden magic, his hair a halo, his eyes sparkling, the veins under his skin a deep gold for just a moment, then back to normal.

Haley grinned, hefting her trident and letting it spin as well, charging up with crackling purple magic. She stabbed it into the ground, forming an array of summoning magic around Shale. 

As the towering form of a Storm Lord rose up, Haley grinned.

This was the last time anyone would call them weak.
