Dinovember 2017 Day 22, Hatzegopteryx And Balaur Bondoc. . This one is a bit rushed, but I wanted to be prepared for the holidays. . Back in the Cretaceous, Transylvania was once part of an island known as Hateg (forgive my misspelling) Island. This was another world of dwarf dinosaur species, with its own miniature sauropods and iguanodonts. But there were also a couple cases of insular gigantism, where an animal normally small on the mainland gets the chance to grow bigger than usual. One example was Balaur bondoc, a stocky creature with two sickle claws on each foot (experts are still trying to figure out if it was a raptor type dinosaur or a flightless bird). And then there’s Hatzegopteryx, a giant pterosaur about the size of a giraffe, probably the largest flying animal to ever exist. While it had relatives throughout the world, Hatzegopteryx was unusual in that it had thicker bones and jaws wide enough to swallow a human whole. This, coupled with the lack of large theropods on Hateg Island, means it was the dominant predator in Prehistoric Transylvania. Hence, I dressed this specimen up in Dracula colors and gave him a baby Balaur to eat. . #instaart #artistoninstagram #paleoart #horror #dinovember #drawdinovember #dinovember2017 #pterosaur #azhdarchid #hatzegopteryx #giant #monster #predator #dinosaur #babydino #dinoart #balaur #balaurbondoc #dracula #redeyes #art #artwork #creature #concept #conceptart #character #characterart #characterdesign #creaturedesign #digitalart #digital #pterodactyl #flyingcreatures
