My top 5 ballet dream roles
#5- Rubies Soloist (Jewels)
I love the energy of the role and all the petite allegro
#4- The Firebird (Firebird)
So much drama in this role, I’m also dying to wear the costume
#3- Dark Angel (Serenade)
Even though this role is generally for taller dancers (I’m only 5’5), but I love adagio. Also, serenade for strings makes me cry
#2- Gamzatti (La Bayadère)
I just love a good diva, and that’s exactly what Gamzatti is. Her wedding variation is my absolute favorite classical variation
#1- Aurora (Sleeping Beauty)
This would be my dream lead role. The Rose Adagio is probably my favorite section from any classical ballet and I would kill to do it. She also doesn’t have to do the big 32, which makes me so happy because I hate fouettés with a burning passion
Today the ballet teacher decided to skip center work all together and teach us Giselle's act 1 variation instead, which was awesome because I've never done it before. It was a ton of fun and a great challenge, and he gave excellent feedback.
He's the best. I wish he taught more often.
Ok, so I have a question. Just putting some feelers out there.
If I were to teach virtual private ballet/pointe/variations lessons, would anybody be interested?
This could be an actual class, or you could send in a video and I'll return some feedback. I'd try to keep it as affordable as possible, as it's important to me to keep dance education accessible.
Is this something you (or a friend) might be interested in?

This video is shared via Reddit in response to a ballet teacher’s question:
Whenever | teach variations, I like to have my students watch a video of a pro dancing it first to see how it looks in the wild and be inspired before we dive in.
For Harlequinade, though, I can only find YAGP videos. While the dancers in those are of course talented, I would prefer a video of a pro ballerina if possible. I know ABT did a production in 2018 but I can't find footage of it besides promo stuff.
Anyone know where I can find a video? Or know where that variation fits in the storyline of the ballet? Thanks in advance!
A huge shoutout to Korean National Ballet prima ballerina Sim Hyunhee for filling in that gap! Wish more ADULT PRINCIPAL ballet dancers will do that (now viral) variation in the near future! (To see it in full, scroll to 24:25 in the above video.)
Oh, and here’s a tutorial on it for my ballet lambs out there:
As the extensions increase, the tempos decrease…La Bayadere 3rd Shade Variation
Video: Navarre Brixen I really like the notated version, it's so sparkling and musical. The pace is extraordinary. I find so many ballet scores have a lugubrious pace to accommodate high extensions and painfully slow adagios…Not everything needs to be Giselle, folks. I'd like to see the tempo pick-up a bit. Does anyone know of a company where they dance some of the classic variations at faster speeds? Or is this just going to be the trend forever and ever, everywhere.

Why are there not youtube tutorials on classical ballet variations?
