i posted this on Twitter but here’s my take on the ballon dor racism situation:

vini was not snubbed entirely due to systematic racism. france football is probably an inherently racist institution. they can both be true!

France football didn’t start awarding non European players until fairly recently in the grand scale of things, so yes, it’s possible that the institution itself has roots in racism. Additionally, the Ballon d’Or is voted on by journalists—humans with biases, and sometimes those biases are racist. However that claim, even if there’s a likelihood is true, can’t explain the snubbing entirely.

On the other hand, Vinicius most likely lost votes due to the success of his teammates and the closeness of the race. This year, Bellingham won Player of the Season and went to the Euros final. Carvajal won the UCL and the Euros and scored in the CL final. Rodeo was consistent year round, won the Euros and PotT. Vini had a great UCL season, but only showed up in the 2nd half of the season and not at all in the Copa—which is incredibly important for the Ballon d’Or. So, there’s not much discerning Vini from his teammates. They split the vote of those who favored looking at people’s stats in the club season.

Also, everyone just prematurely assumed Vini would be winning the Ballon d’Or. It was never confirmed! It was always a close race and there have been even greater snubbings for people who probably put up better stats (Neymar, Lewandowski, Ribery, etc.).

So yeah. Could racism be a factor? It almost always is to some extent. Is it also wrong to say it was the ONLY reason when there are so many other issues at okay? Yeah.
