The very next day the German astronomer Simon Marius. also independently discovers the same three moons which he names Io, Europa and Ganymede. 7th January 1785, the first balloon flight across the English Channel by and John Jeffries. Two days later in 1793, Jean Pierre Blanchard also pilot’s the first balloon flight in the US lifts in Philadelphia. The public interest in Balloon flight, created ‘Balloonomania’ in the late 18th century, which continued into the 19th. Images of balloons were depicted on collectibles such as plates, cups, clocks, snuff boxes, and bracelets; as well as in Romantic poetry by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and Percy Shelley. William Blake also mocked the balloon fascination in his unfinished “An Island in the Moon”, written in 1784. 9th January 1848, death of German pioneering astronomer Caroline Herschel, brother of fellow astronomer William Herschel. Caroline Herschel was the first woman to gain a salary as a scientist, as well as discovering a number of comets, including 35P/Herschel–Rigollet which bears her name; she was also the first woman in 1828, to be awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. The C. Hershel crater on the Moon is named after her. 31st January 1785, birth of the English balloonist Charles Green. After the success of the Jacques Charles and the Robert brothers’ balloon, and the manned flight by the Montgolfier brothers' balloon Aerostat ‘Réveillon’ both in 1783; the concept of ballooning became exceptionally popular in the late 18th and 19th century. In 1836, the ‘Royal Vauxhall’ balloon which was used as a pleasure balloon in the London pleasure gardens (Vauxhall Gardens) was flown by the now famous Charles Green who had made 200 ascents by 1835. Setting a major long distance record, the "Royal Vauxhall", flew overnight from Vauxhall Gardens to Weilburg in the Duchy of Nassau, Germany, a distance of 480 miles (770 km): this record was not broken until 1907. The public interest in ‘Balloonomania’ in the 18th and 19th centuries, saw images of balloons depicted on collectibles such as plates, cups, clocks, snuff boxes, and bracelets; as well as in Romantic poetry by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and Percy Shelley. See link in bio. 22nd October 1797, French balloonist and the inventor of the frameless parachute Andre-Jacques Garnerin makes the first parachute descent from a balloon in Paris, using his silk umbrella-shaped device. Ascending connected to a balloon, at a height of 3,000 feet, Garnerin cut the cord and descended with the parachute swinging wildly, before it hit the ground with Garnerin emerging uninjured. The following year Garnerin created a scandal, when he announced that his next balloon flight would include a female passenger, Citoyenne Henri. Although the announcement created a media sensation, the authorities in Paris initially issued an injunction, citing that reduced air pressure might have a detrimental effect on the organs of a delicate female body, and that the close proximity of the balloons basket would result in impropriety. The injunction was later overturned and the flight took place, on the 8th July 1798 from the Parc Monceau in Paris. Citoyenne Henri was later accoladed as the first woman "who ever had the courage to trust herself in the regions of air". Despite this credit, other women had already flown in balloons before the French Revolution. Jean-Pierre Blanchard comenzó una gira por Europa.
