I loved the way academy drake worked so much, I used the idea twice! In all honesty, I think this might just be how I do +1/+1 kicker cards from now on. Its a great way of making a creature interesting lore-wise, and translates perfectly. Plus it means more creatures for you!
While baloths as a whole are feared across dozens of planes, few inspire as visceral terror in their victims like the baloth gorger. These hulking, reptilian creatures focus on little beyond eating, spending the majority of their time hunting and consuming other creatures. The appetite of these baloths is never picky, and they rarely think twice about assaulting even the most heavily armed groups of travelers.
Top of the Food Chain. Baloth gorgers care little about where they get their meal, only caring for the size of the kill. A juvenile gorger will attempt to attack and eat anything it believes it can overpower, including many creatures larger than it. With each baloth gorger left on its own, they must learn for themselves what can and can’t be eaten, and many die from attempting to attack and eat dragons or giants. Many more, however, succeed in killing and eating enormous creatures like mammoths and small whales. As a bloth gorger grows older, its established list of what can be eaten quickly outgrows its list of what can’t, particularly as creatures slowly move from one list to the other.
Growth Spurt. Baloth gorgers are headstrong creatures, prone to being injured in fights they never had a chance of winning. But this does little to slow them, as the beasts are always quick to heal, and grow larger with each meal. Unlike other mundane creatures, a baloth gorger does not reach adulthood as time passes, but instead enters its adulthood by eating a large enough quantity. When a baloth gorger has eaten enough to reach adulthood, it temporarily enters a stage of sluggish inactivity, where the time it formerly spent eating is not used to sleep. This time is best for hunting and killing a baloth gorger, as it quickly grows exhausted from even the slightest exertion. But this window is short, and after only a week, the baloth has experienced an incredible increase in size, and returns to its former hungry self.
Gluttony of the Starved. If possible, an adult baloth gorger exhibits an even larger appetite than it had when young. These adults, referred to as engorged baloths, spend nearly every waking hour eating as much as they can. They are aided in this endeavor by their large size and increased bulk, enabling them to consumed nearly every other creature they lay their eyes on- something they happily attempt to do. Because of their size and the amount of food required, an engorged baloth can’t afford to stop eating, even in the middle of hunting. An engorged baloth will swallow living prey in one bite and begin to devour them while moving to the next kill, only stopping if they haven’t finished their first mouthful in time for the second.
