Photographer Eric Lafforgue traveled to Southern Iran, where women still wear the boregheh. Girls start wearing the traditional mask at age nine, and never take it off in public again. The tradition is slowly dying out, but it’s still popular in Bandari and Baluch communities. While some women joke the mask is helpful to hide wrinkles, others say men prefer women with whiter skin, so they cover their faces to protect them from the sun.
