my beautiful baby balus the alchemist!!! i love him so much he’s my son
Holy shit what an obscure reference.
No, I’m not talking about referencing Laputa in general, I’m talking about him saying “balus” (how it’s supposed to be spelled in english, not BALS).
This is more widely known as a meme that originated on 2chan circa 2003, the original Japanese 4chan (which is way more deep web). I’m going to try to summarize this the best that I can...
Nobody really knows WHY it took off as a meme, but it all started in 2011 after a totally random broadcast of Castle In The Sky on Japanese TV. For some reason, an estimated 25,088 Twitter users tweeted “バルス”(”Balus”) per SECOND as it aired. Why? Because all these people were 2chan users.
For those who don’t know the movie, “Balus” is the spell of destruction that destroys Laputa. It originated on 2chan where users would post Balus memes in hopes of ending a bad thread; using it as a “spell of destruction” for said thread. When the movie aired during this memes popularity, it was like the equivalent to that “mocking Spongebob” episode suddenly broadcasting on every TV channel in America (A lot of people in Japan watch TV FYI) and people jumped on the opportunity to shitpost “バルス” as many times as possible, much to the confusion of those who didn’t use 2chan and thus didn’t understand the joke.
In 2013, Castle In The Sky aired again on JTV, and Yahoo!Japan actually included a “バルス” button atop the page that enabled you to spam your twitter feed with endless “BALUS” tweets.
Just for those curious, when you search “バルス” on Google images you see a bunch of screenshot manip-memes sourced from 2chan threads. (X) It’s a meme very little outside of Japan know about, but at the same time very little in JAPAN know about......which leads me to believe whoever wrote this episode...or Tomohisa Yamashita himself.....lurks on 2chan...
everyone talking abt oblivion again for better or worse got me thinking abt my first tes oc………. Balus <3 (pronounced like US pronunciation of ballast w/o the final t)
Balus (never took a proper orcish surname), 34 (+/-3,500) yrs old, he/they/it pronouns
Born in Orsinium on the 18th of Frostfall, ?E???? (he doesn’t know either)
At first I just used him as my player character in each mainline game w/o thinking abt canonicity or how he’d appear in all of them but then had fun imagining ways for him to actually do all that stuff, and landed on him being some sort of living, walking, dragon break? at this point (in-universe) he’s more a concept than a person, showing up where needed seemingly at random. like m’aiq but more helpful. Its own memories are patched together in such a way that it never rly thinks abt any of it as abnormal, and if you asked him which major event he tackled first he wouldn’t actually have an answer. he’s kinda like a computer defaulting to 0 instead of attempting to do impossible math bc it knows it would crash.
An alchemist by trade, and a destruction and alteration mage by necessity (for self defense and magical background knowledge), Balus has never had a long-term job other than selling tinctures and ingredients as a traveling merchant. He’s more of a happy-go-lucky figure than most orcs, which tends to put him in others’ good graces.
They’re quick and witty, but definitely too trusting, and have gotten into all manner of trouble trying to help a stranger who’s clearly going to kill them.
