I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you don't know about Varian and the Seven Kingdoms.

It's a spin-off comic by Kay Hayes and Anna Lencioni, two of Rapunuzel's Tangled Adventures animators and storyboard-artists.

It's two years after the finally and Varian is 18.

Hugo is 19, one year older than Varian.

For your information, Hugo and Varian have been an item for years.

Hey! This is slightly embarrassing to ask because I feel like everyone knows already, but what is the Seven Kingdoms au? The only things I understand about it are it's Varian centric and someone named Hugo exists.

Haha, okay!

Varian and the Seven Kingdoms was a spinoff comic that Tangled the Series storyboard artists Kait Ritter and Anna Lencioni pitched to Disney, which disney ultimately rejected. After the series ended, @kritterart (Kait) released all their notes on the project to the public as an official fanwork AU, with the stern note that none of this is canon.

Since Varian was such a popular character, the AU really took off. It involves his mother (and whatever happened to her), who they named Ulla, and Varian’s ragtag band of found family friends, plus his eventual love interest Hugo. (The comic would have canonized Varian being bi.)
