Today Brazil celebrates its Independence Day! On September 7th, 1822 Pedro I declared independence from Portugal by symbolically removing his blue and white armband that represented Portuguese rule. The banknote that is featured today is the 10 Reais banknote from Brazil! On the front it features the bust of the Effigy of the Republic, a symbol of the Brazilian Republic, complete with Phrygian cap and laurel wreath. The banknote of the day is the Canadian $5 dollar! It features the Prime Minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911, Wilfrid Laurier. Next to him is a foil patch of the West Block of Parliament Hill! Today the Philippines celebrates the life of Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. with the official holiday Ninoy Aquino Day! Benigno was a senator for the Philippines starting in 1967 and was a strong opponent to President Ferdinand Marcos. His opposition to Marcos caused his arrest and ultimately his life because on August 21st, 1983 Benigno was assassinated upon his return to the Philippines.
