It’s canon now that the statue is Kannon.

(Mizuko Kuyō Kannon, Daikannon-ji Temple, Mie Prefecture (source: http://www.chinabuddhismencyclopedia.com/en/index.php/Kannon_Bosatsu_(Bodhisattva)

The deity is referred as “Kanzeon Bosatsu”, Kanzeon being another name for Kannon, during the play, and later explicitly as Kannon by the villagers who talk about Banmon.

The statue is not present in the original manga.
