THE BANSHEE: HOW SCREAMING BECAME AN ART FORM

Once upon a time — in misty, rain-soaked, absolutely-no-such-thing-as-dry-socks Ireland — there lived spirits closer to heartbreak than to horror.

Enter: the banshee (or bean sídhe, meaning "woman of the fairy mound"), a professional screamer, accidental fashion icon, and emotional support wailer for the ancient Irish.

How It Started: Long before she was haunting your mental health with piercing cries in the middle of the night, the banshee was part of a respectable (ish) community of fairy folk. Originally, she wasn’t some random ghoul who hated joy — she was a messenger of death, yes, but also a guardian of family grief. (A sort of cosmic grief counselor, but louder.)

In the oldest legends, banshees were tied to noble families — especially the ancient ones with more drama than a reality TV series. If a family member was about to kick the bucket, the banshee would arrive early to wail and sing them into the afterlife. (Because in Celtic tradition, your sendoff was supposed to be loud, messy, and very public — none of this tasteful, whispery mourning nonsense.)

Her scream wasn't just "someone’s about to die" — it was "someone deserves to be mourned in maximum drama, and by God, I will deliver."

Early Career Highlights:

The Original Emo Queen: Singing dirges before it was cool.

Fairy Royalty Connections: Some banshees were considered so glamorous and terrifying that they were thought to be literal fairy nobility.

Not Evil, Just... Loud: Contrary to later horror movies, banshees weren’t killing people. They were just... extremely enthusiastic about your impending demise.

Old, veiled crone with red-rimmed eyes from centuries of crying (your Irish grandmother’s bad side).

Depending on the story, she's either heartbreakingly beautiful or absolutely terrifying — sometimes both, because emotions are complicated.

How She Got So Screamy:

Some say banshees are the spirits of women who died in childbirth or violent tragedy — stuck between worlds, determined to turn every family drama into a full Broadway production.

Others claim banshees choose the families they cry for, bound by ancient pacts, bloodlines, and a healthy amount of passive-aggressive loyalty.

Either way: She screams, you cry, and someone, somewhere, updates the family tree with ✝️.

Modern Banshee Energy:

Ghosted your date? She screamed at them.

Your roommate forgot your birthday? A low wail in the pipes.

Your ex is thriving? The banshee sends condolences.

Your ancestors plotting chaos from the beyond? She’s already on vocal warm-ups.

In short: banshees are not here to kill you — they’re here to make sure your death (and your emotions) get the full high-stakes, gothic Irish treatment they deserve.
