ALL RIGHT but for real. phew. this could actually be any number of things, so excuse me while i think out loud for a bit.

pride ; abso-friggin’-lutely, this started him on the path to his own self destruction. while i’m not a greek soldier from the trojan war, i can definitely understand that, for the time period, having your ‘war prize’ taken from you by your commanding officer was a huge insult. so i can understand why achilles would be pissed off (to put it mildly), but when days go by and greek soldiers are dying because he refuses to fight, it gets to a point where you can’t help but be like “dude, get over yourself.” and of course he doesn’t, not even when patroclus begs him. 

ruthlessness/vengefulness ; considering the prophecy that he was always doomed to die, and that his death would be brought about after he kills hector, he had a hand in his own demise by going after hector and killing him in revenge for patroclus’s death. so though his pride definitely kickstarted him down the path to his own death, his thirst for revenge sealed his fate. 

and while it’s not a character defect or a flaw, i’d say his overpowering love for patroclus also helped doom him. after all, up until patroclus’s death, “what has hector ever done to me?”
