Ordinarily, Constantine’s incessant chatter is met with silence - or unsubtle evasion, when questions are asked that the dreamlord does not wish to answer. John asks a lot of questions. Not all of them are ones he seems to expect an answer to - often it’s like he’s talking just to talk, because he knows Dream won’t.
Morpheus has learned to… endure this. Occasionally he even appreciates it, in his way.
He has never expressed this to John.
He would not know how.
The question had been something like, do you like yours, then, the one that made you? Did something make you? on the subject of creators, loosely related to a previous topic of Dream’s own creations, his duties to them. Dream had thought about it for a quiet moment and said, “No. Not as such.”
Then he looked away, but—
But Constantine reacts with such glee that for an odd moment Dream thinks that John is about to clap his shoulder. He’s beaming so bright and standing so close.
Fortunately for both of them no such incident occurs. He doesn’t know why he thought it might.
Dream drifts past him without so much as a whisper of fabric. Silver-gold specks of dreamdust linger where they drift from his coat.
His voice has gone stony again.
