“BARABBAS WAS ME.

I used to wonder why the crowd chose Barabbas… A guilty man. A sinner. A criminal.

Why would they release the one who deserved punishment, and condemn the One who was innocent?

Then it hit my heart.

I AM BARABBAS.

I was the guilty one. I was the sinner. I was the one who deserved judgment.

Yet Jesus stood in my place.

He took the cross that should have been mine. He carried the shame that belonged to me. He suffered the pain that I deserved. He was rejected so I could be accepted. He was bound so I could be free.

That moment was not just history— it was GRACE IN ACTION.

Barabbas walked away free because Jesus stayed. And every one of us who has been forgiven, saved, and redeemed by His mercy is living proof of that same love.

This is the beauty of the Gospel: THE GUILTY WENT FREE BECAUSE THE INNOCENT TOOK HIS PLACE.

So every time I remember Barabbas, I no longer see just a man in the Bible.

I SEE MYSELF. A sinner rescued by mercy. A broken soul redeemed by love. A life saved by the sacrifice of Christ.

Thank You, Jesus, for taking my place on the cross. For loving me at my worst. For setting me free when I deserved chains.

And they all cried out at once, saying, “Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas”— who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder. Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”

Symbolically, we all are Barabbas. A prisoner of rebellion, guilty of murder and a number of other things. Yet, we were let go, set free, and Christ the most innocent man that ever walked the Earth, took our place.

Death was certain for Barabbas. 3 crosses were prepared, one of them for us, the rebellious murder.

As we reflect this Good Friday,

Consider standing before the crowd next to Christ that day; What look would He have given you? What look would have given Him? Seek Christ and His Mercy and Grace. He loves you so much.

So imagine this: You have a friend, a very good friend, who is always there by your side, who was your only solace when one of your siblings died. This very good friend that grows up with you and always protects you. And then, one day, he gets killed. You are devastated. Soon thereafter, you marry your betrothed, and when you come back to your house, your now husband offers you an endearing wedding gift: A rug made by your friend’s dissected body. You faint in horror and feel revolted, and cannot do nothing but to hide what remains of him in the attic and try to forget.

Because that is exactly what happens to Clara when Barabbas, her beloved dog, is killed then very same night she is betrothed to Esteban Trueba.
