pink hair don't care
shameless chapter 8
holla here is chapter 8
Within 24 hours, Jack had his other tape, and Cass's father had extra cash in his bank account.
It was so shady the way it'd happened- meeting in a dark alley like she was in some sort of TV show. She felt like she should be slipping him drugs, though a sex tape might be just as bad. Probably just as bad, she thought. Cass told herself that she probably shouldn't laugh about the big trench coat Jack was wearing either, but it was so hard.
He had been lurking back by the trashcans in the alley behind the local pizza joint. He had his head down and hands shoved in his pockets, which only made it all the funnier to Cass. When he'd ignored her question of "why here?" and asked her if she'd "brought the item", she'd looked away to stop herself from cracking up.
However ridiculous the meet ups were, it didn't take away the fact that it was almost blackmail. It seemed to be only recent that she'd started to feel a little guiltier, though.
Luke was quickly advancing to one of the people Cass talked to the most, out of work. Of course, there was Orion and Ashton, but with the recent news of the baby (which Ashton had been thrilled about), they were off in their own little world. It was kind of cute, Cass thought, how she'd come home and find them snuggled up together sleeping on the couch with a baby name book laying nearby, a few highlighters scattered on the coffee table and the floor. Losing her best friend to baby fever sucked, though, and it just so happened that Luke was the only other friend she had.
She'd decided that she was allowed to let herself call Luke a friend, purely because he acted like it. Which, of course, brought her back to the whole guilt factor. She knew that he was an asshole, but he didn't deserve to have sex tapes released. That is, if Jack were planning to release them; Cass really didn't know. She felt a little queasy when she tried to comfort herself by saying it was probably illegal to release them, though it was probably worse to record without full-party consent. Everyone in the industry knew that consent was a necessity for films- "amature" or otherwise.
The closer it drew to the holidays, the less the both of them worked. Cassia mostly hung out at Luke's house, being lazy after a long day at the hospital doing not a lot, maybe making out as well. It always lead to something more, and maybe that made Cass feel good, so she didn't have an issue with going to his.
He'd gotten a few solo shoots that he'd let her attend to watch while he shot, and then took her out to wherever afterwords. He made suggestive comments to her all the while (and had once even had the audacity to tell her to go grab him some coffee, to which she replied, "get your own damn cup of coffee."), but by that time, Cass was so used to them, she shot them down like they were nothing. Luke was Luke, and she didn't think he'd really change all that much, apart from getting a bit friendlier and quitting asking her to grab his balls while they fucked. Which, to be honest, was a fucking relief on her part.
"Earth to Cass," Luke snapped his fingers in her face. "Earth to Cass, over."
"Shut up." Cassia grumbled.
They were curled next to each other in Luke's bed, having finished having some of the laziest morning sex Cass had ever had, which was saying something, considering she had a lot of morning sex. He was supporting his head with his hand, his other slipping on to her bare hipbone.
"You zoned out there for a bit," he told her. "Thinking about my dick?"
"If I wanted to think about your dick, I would reach over and jerk you off," Cassia nudged herself towards him- just enough to rest her forehead on the center of his chest.
"Your dick isn't that great, anyways." she added.
"My dick is fantastic and you love it." Luke grumbled, nuzzling his head into the top of her hair. He slid his arm back around her, laying his palm flat on the small of her back. He was right- not that she's ever admit it to him. He'd get overly cocky and fuck everything up.
They laid like that for quite some time. So long, in fact, that Cass lost track. She might've fallen asleep, she didn't really know. She was groggy and sleepy and it was warm underneath the covers, sucking the body heat away from Luke. Her eyes were resting behind closed kids.
"So," he said after a while. "You wanna hang out at your place today?"
Cassia kept her eyes closed. "What's wrong with staying here?"
Luke didn't reply for a few minutes. "I dunno, I want a change or whatever. Seems like you don't want me over there," he joked, pulling his lips from her hair.
She didn't want him over there. Her and Orion's house was a kind of getaway from everything. Having him pick her up there, once, had been enough of him there to last her a lifetime.
"Well," she said slowly. "Ash is coming over today and we're gonna set up the tree, so.."
"Are you inviting me or making an excuse for me not to come?" Luke hummed.
"Making an excuse," said her brain. "Inviting you to come," said her mouth.
Luke looked at her as if unsure she was actually serious. "If you don't want me over, I won't come.”
Cass hesitated a little. Guilt pooled in her stomach when she looked up at him; his face was blank, unreadable. It was so different from what she was used to- he was usually like an open book. He didn’t hide anything. If he was in a bad mood, he snapped. If he was horny, he took the appropriate actions. Now, he just looked calm, almost indifferent.
She made her decision a few short seconds later. Leaning up, she leaned her forehead against his, pouting a little until her lips touched his. “Come over,” she told him, trying to focus her eyes on his. “Set up the tree with us, it’ll be fun.”
“You’re just inviting me because you feel bad.” Luke grumbled, breath warm on her face.
While it was a little true, Cassia wasn’t about to admit that. Besides, as much as she disliked Luke being an asshole, she knew that she shouldn’t be a bitch to him, just because he acted like he did.
“That’s a lie,” she pulled back a little, looking him dead in the eyes. “Don’t be an asshole, just come along.”
“You’re such a bitch,” was his reply. Rolling over and away from her, he slid his bare, lanky legs off of the bed, his feet hitting the wood floor with a soft thud. It must’ve been cold, because he let out a slow hiss of air. “I don’t really want to go anyways.”
Cassia tugged the sheets up to cover her chest, then sat straight up, watching him. His boxers were red plaid- her favorite. “Don’t be a liar, Luke. You want to come over.”
“Do not.” he snapped. He kept his back turned to her, but stood and walked to his dresser across the room, digging out clothes.
Cassia sighed, leaning over to grab her phone from the bedside table. Glancing at the screen, she saw a missed call and a new text from Jack. There was a soft wooshing sound in front of her, followed by the rush of cool air, so she decided to look up instead of reading anything.
Luke was standing in front of her, now naked, apart from a towel resting low on his hips. His clothes laid on the bed in front of her.
“Come shower with me?” he mumbled. His fingers tugged through his messy hair- still partially quiffed from where she’d tugged it up earlier that morning.
“I don’t know,” she grumbled, unlocking her phone and focusing her attention on that. If he wanted to be a dick, he could apologize. “You’re kind of being an asshole.”
The spot next to her on the bed dipped slightly as Luke sat down. His lips attached to her neck, pulling her flush against his chest. “Please?”
A shudder went through her body. She hated that she could feel the smirk that seemed to stick on Luke’s face- it was irritating in the hottest way. She hated it, but she hated herself for loving it even more. “No.”
A soft chuckle came from deep in his chest. “I know you want to, Cass,” He tugged the sheet down, exposing her to the cool air of the room, and really giving her no choice but to cross her arms tightly over her chest and lean into the nearest heat source, which just so happened to be him. “Besides, think of how hot it’ll be.”
“The shower or the sex?” she murmured, eyes slipping closed as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders. She felt his head duck down to about the level of hers, and then the peck of his lips on her cheek.
“Both,” he told her. “Both will be hot, if you get in with me.”
Reluctantly, she sighed. Peeking an eye open, she put on as much innocence as she could muster. “As long as you carry me there.”
Once again, the smirk made a comeback. “Of course.”
-
The drive to Cassia and Orion’s was a short one. Or, at least, it seemed short to Luke. Cassia sat in shotgun while he drove, as per usual, fumbling with the radio. Not that Luke minded- not really, anyway.
“This okay?” Cass said, turning to face him. She was talking about some song that he’d never heard before, that he didn’t really give a flying fuck about, and he really just should’ve said he didn’t mind, but there was something in him that double dog dared him to say “no”, so he did.
She rolled her eyes, but reached out, changing the station into a top 100 one, then sat back, looking out the window.
Luke didn’t really even know why he was such a dick sometimes. It had always been like that, though; he remembered picking on the other kids in elementary school. He also remembered teachers pulling the little girls he bullied aside and telling them that because he picked on them, it meant he liked them.
Most of the time, it wasn’t true; he was just an asshole. However, with Cass, nothing had ever been more true. He didn’t want to get attached to her. He didn’t ask to fall for her, and maybe that’s why he was such a dick. He got nervous around her- he couldn’t help it. Bumping into her on the train, seeing her for the first time, sparked something inside of him. He’d seen her videos before, because what young guy doesn’t watch porn? She was the hot thing, the object of envy for every horny teenager with internet access- how could he not get flustered at first? For her to work in the same building as him was a bout of good luck, he thought. It was even luckier when the studio offered him a photography job.
Of course, the job they’d offered was for some unknown level star, a B or C level, at the most. He’d flirted shamelessly with the secretary until she’d given him the name of her boss, who he’d paid so he could get a good word about him to the big boss who had actually given him the job. He’d run into Cass the night after he ran into her on the train, and he’d panicked. He did exactly what he’d done in elementary school, all throughout middle and high school- he’d been an asshole.
She was, by far, the most strong-willed woman he’d ever met. Maybe it was the fact that he’d already had a thing for her before they’d even met, but her being independent- and frankly, a little bitchy- made him weak. He couldn’t stop himself from making snarky, sarcastic remarks to her, but at the same time, he was able to be gentle enough to where she stayed, which was a confusing matter in itself.
Now, looking over at Cassia, who had stopped pouting, Luke wondered why she stayed. Maybe for the sex, probably not because he was the kindest. He knew that if he was her, he would’ve dropped him the second she left his house, after she stayed the first night. Luke almost flinched remembering how douchey he’d been. He felt so guilty- there she was, defensive probably due to being around guys like him, and he had done the exact opposite of what would get her to stay. He must’ve done something right, though; she was still there.
Next to him, Cassia reached out her hand, laying it with her palm up on his thigh. Luke glanced over at her. She wasn’t even looking at him- just had her palm out.
He didn’t protest, though. He took a hand off the wheel, placing it over her open palm, letting her slip her long, thin fingers inbetween his. He didn’t even care that he’d get nervous and his hands would sweat all over hers. He was just happy that she’d done something. Not that he’d ever admit that out loud.
It'd only been about a month and a half that he'd known her on a personal level- aka, since they'd fucked- but Luke felt like if it kept in the direction it was going, they could be more than what they were. He wasn't sure what they were, really. It felt like friends with benefits, except Luke didn't want to be friends anymore. He wanted to be the only one to see her in the mornings, to be every goddamn cliche that he could think of. Every time he thought about it, he had the urge to punch himself in the face in hopes that it'd just go away. It never did.
"Luke," Cassia's voice snapped. "You just missed my apartment."
"Oh," Luke said. "I meant to do that."
Luke looked over just in time to see Cassia rolling her eyes, but instead of making a snarky remark about how they'd get stuck in the back of her head, he held his tongue and turned around, headed straight into the apartment parking. Finding a spot wasn't easy; it was nearly full, probably with friends and family visiting for the holidays. The only open spots were near the back. No one wanted to walk a quarter mile in the frigid cold. Unfortunately, that's what they had to do.
"Sorry." Luke said a little guiltily, looking at her dress, long legs bare, arms exposed. He got out of the car and opened the back door, digging around until he found the black jacket he left in case of emergencies. It had crumbs and hair shed on it, but it would keep her warm. "Here," he handed it to her, ignoring the way her nose crinkled up when she took it. "It's better than nothing."
"Is it really?" she mumbled, then stopped. She took a breath, opening the car door, sliding it on. "Thanks."
Luke nodded, closing up the back door, locking up the car before walking around to wait next to her. She didn't look up at him, but slid her fingers out of the jacket, taking his hand with hers. His face heated up- he told himself it was from the cold.
They walked the distance to the door, wind whipping Cass' hair into his face. It wasn't unpleasant until he got a strand in his eye, but again, he bit his tongue and tugged the jacket hood over her head in hopes that it wouldn't happen again. It didn't.
She moved around him, switching hands and leaning into him perfectly. His body blocked the wind, and she stayed relatively warm.
They were silent all the way up the elevator to her apartment door, where Cass stopped and looked at him.
Her lips pursed, and then she opened her mouth, like she was going to say something, and then closed again. She sighed, looking back at eye level, and then opened the door.
Luke didn't understand girls.
-
"Don't you love it?" Orion babbled, giant grin plastered on her face. She was referring to the tinsel and lights strung from every railing (and most walls) in the apartment, lopsided with mismatched colors.
"Yeah," Cass looked around, feigning excitement. "It looks great, Ri."
"Ashton helped." Orion hummed, looking overjoyed.
"I used to work for a decorating company," Ashton added, carrying the box of ornaments down from the attic. "We went around and helped put lights up on people's houses, it was pretty hard work."
Luke glanced over at Cass, who's eyes were rolled back in her head. He nearly snorted, but covered it with a cough.
"You guys ready to decorate?" Orion pried open the box, tossing the lid at Cass, who dodged it quickly, making a face.
"Yeah," Cass grumbled, pushing herself off of the couch. She turned to Luke, who had been next to her, and nodded her head to the large tree. "C'mon, Lukey."
He grinned, hoisting himself up. He brushed his jeans off, and then made his way over, feeling her body trailing close behind him.
"This is nice," Orion said after a little bit. They four of them had been mostly working in silence, listening to the Christmas music coming out of the radio in the kitchen. Orion hated the silence, though. "Last year it was just me and Cass."
"That was a good Christmas though," Cassia said from behind the tree, a little muffled. She poked her head out, looking at her friend. "Do you remember the carolers?"
Orion stifled laughter, earning confused looks from both Ashton and Luke.
"Carolers?" Ash raised an eyebrow, a smirk forming on his lips.
"She never told you about the carolers?" Cassia's voice went up several octaves, which made Luke's eyebrows shoot up. Her high voice was kind of funny. "Ri, tell him the story!"
Orion laughed openly this time, covering her mouth. Her eyes crinkled at the corners, a hot flush spreading over her cheeks. "No fucking way."
"Tell me!" Ashton cried, lurching forward to place his hands on her hips from behind. "Tell me or I'll take down all the lights."
"No!" Orion squealed, wiggling out of his grasp, grinning. "You're a grinch if you do that."
"Oh, come on," Cassia teased, eyeing the two. "You don't want him to know about you answering the door na-"
"La, la, la," Orion yelled frantically, reaching up in a desperate attempt to plug Ashton's ears.
"-ked?"
"You answerd the door naked?" Luke said gleefully, laughing. "How'd that happen?"
Ashton was laughing loudly while Orion ducked her head, cheeks flaming as Cassia continued.
"It was just us in the house, and Rion had just gotten out of the shower," Cass grinned, then laughed when Orion buried her face in Ashton's chest and let out a low groan. "The doorbell rang, and I was making supper, so, Rion decided that it was probably Ashton or someone who wouldn't really mind, and when she opened the door, there were like, 8 kids who started singing."
"Stop." Orion groaned, nuzzling closer into Ashton's chest.
"She was so surprised she dropped her towel," She paused, laughter bubbling out. Ashton shook with laughter, and Luke was covering his mouth to try to stop. "Screaming kids and boobs, that was a great Christmas."
"Go make hot chocolate or something," was what the muffled shout sounded like, coming from Orion. "Go away."
"That's alright, Luke'll help while you and Ash talk about that," she giggled. "Luke, come help me."
"The hot chocolate's too high up for her to reach." Orion's muffled voice came again.
"I'm taller than you, dumbass," Cassia snorted, though it was more playful than anything. She walked to the kitchen, Luke following close behind.
"Why haven't we hung out with them more?" Luke lowered his voice and asked, a large smile etched on his face.
"They're so dumb," Cass laughed, shaking her head. She opened a cupboard, grabbing down the mix. "Grab the milk from the fridge?"
Luke's nose crinkled up. "You use milk?"
Cassia looked slightly offended, grabbing a few mugs down from the next cupboard. "What else would I use? Water?"
"Duh," Luke snorted, looking at her. "Milk is gross."
"That's it, it's over," Cass said, exaggeratedly. She got a pot out and put it on the burner, getting the milk out herself. "We can't be together if you use water instead of milk for hot chocolate."
Luke smirked, watching her pour the milk into the heating burner. "You implying that we're together?"
Cassia snorted softly, pushing past him to put the milk away. She closed the fridge, then turned and crossed her arms over her chest, scowling at him. "I never said that. I just said we can't, now that I know that you're actually gross."
"You're gross," Luke huffed, mimicking her by crossing his arms, standing up straight so he towered over her. "And so is the milk."
Cass snickered, tilting her head up to look at him. "You sound like my sister," she added. "She's 13."
"That's mildly offensive," Luke stuck his lower lip out, slinking down to lean against the fridge with her. "I'm not a 13 year old girl."
"You act like it sometimes," she told him, leaning her head on to his shoulder. "That's alright, though. I like 13 year old girls."
"You like your sister." Luke said, tilting his head so it rested slightly atop hers.
"Yeah," Cassia sighed a little. "Her and my dad live a ways away, so I don't see her a lot, but I really love her."
"Why didn't you go see them for Christmas?" Luke asked, getting a little quiet. It just seemed like the right time to get serious.
"Money," she replied, quieter, too. "I already send them most of what I earn here. That's the only reason I'm still.. you know."
"You could work at the hospital full time," Luke said quietly. Then, hesitantly, "You're too good to work your other job."
"The receptionist job doesn't pay enough," Cass mumbled, nosing into his shoulder a little more. "I'm already doing overtime for both jobs, and it's still not enough."
"I'll help you job hunt," Luke said near immediately. He didn't even really think about what he was saying. "I'll pay you to be a model for my pictures, or maybe you can get into a big law firm as a receptionist. I'll help with money if you quit working for Jack, right now."
"Why would you even want to do that?" Cassia peeked up at him, frowning a little. "I'm a bitch, you want sex. That's what we are, right?"
Wrong.
Luke hardly processed what he said next. It just kind of came out, word vomit. "Because I like you, a lot. Not just fucking, I mean. I mean, I like fucking you too, but you're independent and strong willed, and I kind of like it when you're a bitch," The words just started pouring out of him, like a faucet that just wouldn't shut off. "I'm an asshole because I'm really fucking into you. It's like elementary school, you know? Like, I want to spend a lot of time with you, all the time, and sometimes I'm just a dick and can't help it, but you still come over to my house and I'm not really sure why, but it's got to be good, right?"
Luke felt like a ball of nerves and run on sentences, especially when Cassia pulled away. His stomach clenched- he shouldn't have said anything. He should've just closed his fat mouth and kept it too himself and everything would've been normal.
"Luke," Cass tugged on his sweater, lips pressed together sternly. "Look at me, Luke."
"No," he mumbled, cheeks flaming. "I'm an idiot. I lied, I'm in it for the sex."
Cassia snorted, hand coming up to rest on the back of his neck. "You're a liar. Look at me so I can talk to you."
Reluctantly, Luke turned his head down just enough to look at her. She was smirking,
still wearing his oversized, crumb-covered jacket- Luke thought she looked hot.
"You're a fucking nerd," she murmured, studying his face. Luke's heart sank, lowering to the bottom most part of his stomach. Probably into his intestines to be digested, then regurgitated. Luke wasn't sure if that was possible, but it sure as hell felt like it. However, Cass continued. "I like you too."
Luke's heart crawled it's way back up into normal position, then soared up into his throat. "Really?"
"Really, really," she grinned, fingers playing with the baby fine hairs on the back of his neck. "And if you didn't get the Shrek reference, we can't be together."
"Are you saying you want to be together?" he teased a little, leaning his head down to press his forehead against hers.
"You're gross," she mumbled, knocking her nose into his.
"No, you're gross," he murmured back.
"For god'a sake, just kiss her already!" came Orion's loud yell from just outside the kitchen, earning a snort from Cassia.
"She's right," she said, tongue flicking over her lips, wetting them a little. "Kiss me now or never, Blondie."
Luke didn't have to be told twice.
