(hi I am going to try blogging about the books I read as I read them)
I’m enjoying this for the same reasons I enjoyed E.O. Wilson’s autobiography: it’s a fascinating look at life in the life sciences in the early 20th century. McClintock was a pioneering genetics researcher who received her PhD in botany from Cornell in 1927, when the field was so male-dominated that women weren’t even allowed to register in most departments. She was fiercely independent and driven, and I am beyond impressed by how much respect she garnered in the scientific community of her day.
Barbara McClintock (16 June 1902 – 2 September 1992)
It is 9:00. Barbara McClintock, Geronimo, John Cho, Joyce Carol Oates, Laurie Metcalf, and Tupac Shakur were all born on this day.
Barbara McClintock was a scientist and cytogeneticist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her work in studying the genetic structure of corn.
Geronimo was a medicine man and prominent leader of the Apache tribe of Native Americans, who resisted the United States government’s encroachment upon Apache land.
John Cho is an actor known for starring in the independent drama film Columbus, the mystery thriller film Searching, and for playing Hikaru Sulu in the Star Trek reboot film series.
Joyce Carol Oates is a writer who has written more than sixty books, not counting her novellas, short story collections, memoirs, essays, poems, and plays. She has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction five times.
Laurie Metcalf is an actress whose career spans almost five decades. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Lady Bird.
Tupac Shakur was a rapper who is commonly regarded as one of the most influential rappers of all time. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Shakur was shot four times by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, dying six days later. The gunman was never identified. If he’d lived, he would’ve turned fifty years old today.
To Barbara, Geronimo, John, Joyce, Laurie, and Tupac, Happy Birthday! And to Tupac specifically - rest in peace.
