as much as I find the idea of this "25th anniversary" nutcracker special to be disrespectful to the original film, I also can't get too worked up about it bc I already had the headcanon that the nutcracker happened many times and would obviously play out differently depending on who "played" Clara/etc other factors. and that was just based on the fact that there was a nutcracker cameo in pink shoes and nutcracker dolls before the movie even came out. so really this special is only canonizing that further.
but it still puts a bad taste in my mouth bc all the heart and soul has gone out of the brand in the last 25 years and this is only proving that in a glaring and obvious way. so like. big sigh I guess

so in the context of the real world, Tommy receives a Bengal Lancer and a Grenadier Guard, which are based on members of the British military obviously. in the context of Parthenia, these are Captain Candy and Major Mint, respectively, and they are from the Parthenian military. but is Parthenia meant to be a sort of fantasy Britain? did they do fantasy colonialism? is Captain Candy (or his family/ancestors) from Parthenia or somewhere else? are these people oppressed like the mice? do they feel any solidarity with the mice? did the mice also come to Parthenia through Parthenia colonizing somewhere else? or, worse yet, were the mice in Parthenia first?

what the labm and similar parodies and "deconstructions" and whatever you want to call them fail to understand is that above all else, ken is barbie's friend. even when it is not romantic, he is her friend. this is ALWAYS the case. ken exists to be barbie's companion, in whatever sense she needs. making them not like each other or care about each other is antithetical to barbie's character, to say nothing of ken's. this is something even da can get right it's fucking embarrassing
