HC + how ben copes with peter being spiderman

im mobile so i cant tag it but tw death mention !

first off, let it be known that from the day peter parker was born, ben was his number one fan. from the moment he laid eyes on his nephew, he was in love (hyperbolically was the only way to describe it, because hyperbolic was how he felt: how could you love someone who was hardly even a person yet so much?). even before peter came to live with them, ben was always there in the background, a cheerleader and a fixture of support. he knew from way back then that peter was destined to do great things. what he didn’t know was that this is how they would manifest.when he learned about spiderman, first would come anger, mostly rooted in fear. how could he do this? how could he possible validate putting his life in danger like this? he had the stark internship, he had midtown, he had a world of possibility to do such good in ways that wouldn’t end up killing him, but it seemed that he was throwing that all away to be some kind of superhero, to emulate the man made monsters they’d been fed humility by since the attacks on new york. this wasn’t the life any nephew of his would lead, this wasn’t the call for a child to make.but that was selfish. because his fear came from memory, from nostalgia. because when he sees peter, explaining all this, he sees richard. he sees his kin trying to save the world on a massive scale, to change what could be beyond their means. he sees his kid brother, the spy, the savior, going out into the world and biting off more than he can chew. he sees the man richard had become, that ben only so briefly known, because he went out and got himself killed. he wondered before and he wonders now: how could someone so smart do something so careless?then he realizes its of his own making. he’d brought peter up to be kind, to be selfless, and what’s more selfless than putting your life on the line every night? saving one life is as valuable as saving a world, he’d said. but it hurts that to save these lives, he’s threatening his own. but in the end, isn’t this noble? shouldn’t he be proud that all those years of preaching had added up to this, a testament to how well he’d been raised, proof that there was space in the world for people to be smart and loyal and compassionate and brave? he copes by remembering this is a culmination of everything peter had been taught to be, and at least if it was the last thing he did, its a thing he’d be proud of, a thing he so badly wanted to be.since the day he was born, ben has been peter parker’s biggest fan. so while it hurts, he loves both sides of his nephew. even if it keeps him up at night, even if it pains his chest and plagues his thoughts, if peter wants to be spiderman, who is he to stand in the way?

13. Did they like school? Teachers? Schoolmates?

LOL HELL NO !!!!! school was one of the worst periods of his life. he suffered through a lot of awful bullying (like... he literally got locked in a janitor’s closet for a full day because some of his peers thought it would be funny, got shit poured on him in the lunchroom, ntm instances of actual, physical assault on top of all the humiliation). he hated pretty much all of his teachers ---- still does in hindsight, because none of them tried to help him and just berated him with all that “you’re so smart!!!! if only you would just apply yourself!!” bullshit. honestly, he really would have preferred cutting off his own arm with a rusty spoon than go to school, even by the time things started getting “better”, because he was still faced with the very same people that ridiculed him and hurt him pretending to be his friend just in hopes he’d get footage of them for his school’s news features. buddy has literally no good memories of school, and it’s really not something he likes discussing either.

41. Is your character aware of who they are? Strengths? Weaknesses? Idiosyncrasies? Capable of self-irony?

most of buddy’s humor is comprised of making fun of himself. because of how his peers treated him in school, and how his dad treats him, he’s pretty hyperaware of all his quirks. he feels like he HAS to be, and it’s probably his only real expression of self preservation. he’s learned to mimic social cues, he’s learned to keep his stimming and tics to himself, and he suppresses a lot of the “bad” behaviors to spare himself from getting made fun of all over again. 

and tbh making fun of himself is probably the only real coping mechanism he has???? and part of that is like... this mentality of, “if i make fun of this first, i’ll beat everyone to the punch and take the fun out of it”. 

as far as being aware of his strengths though? .... not so much. his self esteem is pretty much at an absolute 0. the only thing he thinks of as a strength is his work ethic? all of his flaws are glaringly obvious to him, but acknowledging the good aspects of his personality is a lot more difficult to do, and if anyone tries to praise him he brushes it off. 

45. Is your character pragmatic? Think first? Responsible? All action? A visionary? Passionate? Quixotic?

buddy works in two ways: highly logical, well thought out and well prepared for OR flying by the seat of his pants, no plan, nothing. there is no in between. most of the time though, he’s very prepared for most instances and likes to do his research before making huge decisions.

he is also an actions-based kind of person. because of his history with words and people using words to hurt him, he doesn’t put any weight in words ---- not even his own. he also likes to back things up with evidence, being the logic-based sort of thinker he tends to be. having real, physical evidence also helps him with properly organizing his thoughts, which he has a difficult time with. 

as far as his outlook goes.... he’s an altruist wrapped up in a cynic. buddy would really like to not believe in the best of humanity, but he does. this annoys the hell out of him because he feels like he has absolutely NO reason to see the best in anyone, but he does and it’s got him like /:
