Hi!! Thanks so much for the prompt! <333 It’s my first attempt writing a ghost-ish story, and I really hope you like how it turned out.

#17. And what does this have to do with love, except everything?

After everything that happened (or didn’t happen) in The Land, finding out that ghosts do exist hardly fazes Barbie.

Pearly and translucent, Wanda drapes herself across the stained ceiling of the Kentucky motel. She reclines like she’s just barged her way into Barbie’s apartment and made herself comfy on Barbie’s sofa, as she did a thousand times in life.

“I shouldn’t still be here, you know,” Wanda says.

Barbie folds her arms across her stomach, gazing up at her. Wanda’s voice has a strange echoing quality, as if she’s speaking through a metal tube, but it’s still her voice—low and vital, warm and a little scratchy.

“I know.” She doesn’t say anything else for a while. A TV blares from the room next to hers. Wanda flicks her eyes sideways in silent, withering disapproval, and it’s so dear and familiar that Barbie wants to cry.

Instead, she rolls over on the creaky mattress and opens the drawer of the nightstand. “I have something for you. Before you…go. Will you come down here, please?”

Wanda drifts down to join Barbie on the bed. Crossing her legs, she looks at Barbie expectantly. Barbie unfurls her fingers. A black tube of lipstick winks up from her palm. She unscrews the top, revealing the bright pink shade. “Tacky flamingo, or something. I thought you’d like it.”

“Oh, you gorgeous thing. Come to Mama.” Eagerly, Wanda stretches out pale fingers. They pass straight through the little tube. She makes a face. “Yeah, of course that wasn’t going to work. Anyway, it’s spectacular. Thanks, Barbie-baby.”

“Don’t.”

“Hm?”

Her heart thrums in her chest so hard it hurts. “I’m sorry I—I mean I tried too, I guess, and I hope it showed in the things I did, but—I wish I’d told you before.”

Wanda stares at her, one eyebrow raised. “Now you’re making me nervous, honey. Told me what?”

Barbie swallows hard, and says, “That I love you.”

And Wanda—her wonderful, witty, quick-talking Wanda—is speechless.

As morbid as it is, confession is easier in death. How could Barbie flinch for fear of rejection when the worst outcome possible is already in the past? She has already mourned over Wanda’s grave. But even being so keenly aware of that, the silence that descends between them still punches into Barbie’s gut.

Then Wanda says softly, “Hey.”

She drifts forward, like smoke prompted by a breeze. The cool planes of her hands cup Barbie’s cheeks. Eyes slipping shut, Barbie reaches out with her own hands, seeking an anchor that only comes in the form of a chill over her palms.

“I love you, too.”

Wanda’s kiss is water in the desert, winter after the harshest summer.

Barbie drinks her in, savors her. Then, slowly, painfully, she pries her fingers loose. The air grows warm. Barbie opens her eyes to catch the last wisp of Wanda’s smile, before she is gone.

Barbie wipes the scorching tears from her cheeks. Wanda’s final words echo inside her skull.

After all, there could be no haunting without love. And without love, there could be no letting go, either.

Sunday the 15th - Night Out

In which Wanda takes Barbie out for karaoke and they both get really drunk

It had been six months since Ken left Barbie- But Wanda reminds her that this just means it's the 6 month anniversary of her ditching that dweeb and moving to the big city, Thus cause to celebrate!

So instead of laying in bed and moping Barbie gets dressed, dusts her face with glitter and follows Wanda onto a bus heading to Chinatown.

Wanda takes her to a hole in the wall Japanese karaoke bar with a sign reading THE WHITE KITSUNE in bright neon letters. They split a big plate of shrimp gyoza and do shot after shot of sake that makes Barbie's throat burn in the best way.

Once they're nice and liquored up they make their way to the karaoke machine. Wanda starts them off because she's always been the confident one. She croons out a cover of "Love is a Battlefield" and Barbie can't help but think of how beautiful her singing voice is.

Next it's Barbie's turn, she decides to be bold and selects "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)". As she sings Wanda cheers her on from the sidelines and she tells herself the warm blush growing on her cheeks is just from the sake.

Next came even more sake and a particularly off-key rendition of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"; After that a cover of "Like A Virgin" where Wanda nearly fell over trying to spin like Madonna. Finally to end off the night they chose a duet to "Total Eclipse of the Heart".

As they harmonized as best as their slurred speech allowed they held each other's gaze. Cool blue eyes meeting warm brown in the dim lights of their shared karaoke room.

The subway ride home was surprisingly packed for the late hour. Without a seat to flop onto Wanda opted to nestle herself into the corner as Barbie leaned weakly against a metal pole and tried not to puke.

A sudden jolt lurched Barbie off. She would've fallen to the dirty floor if Wanda hadn't been quick enough to pull her close, Placing a strong hand on her back to keep her in place.

Barbie rested her head against Wanda's chest for the rest of the ride home.

She yawned and closed her eyes, Feeling perfectly safe despite the grime and crime of the New York subway system.

It was nice knowing Wanda was around to catch her if she fell.

BARBIE/WANDA

when I started shipping it if I did: At least the last couple years. I've been simmering on this AWHILE on and off in the back of my mind.

my thoughts: I am so very normal about them:) no really, the image of Barbie as a princess and Wanda as the lady knight, going into danger and facing her fears to save her, trying to look out for her well-being and draw her out of herself - but she does it in a way that doesn't feel like a therapist, it feels like the gentle badgering and not-really-bullying of a friend, is everything to me. I love both of these characters so much and they just *work* as a unit.

What makes me happy about them: How much their relationship would be built on a foundation of genuine friendship and trust. Like, Wanda is snarky and teases Barbie as much as anybody but she also is so caring and gentle with her when she's crying over Martin Tenbones, she immediately drops everything to rush to help her even though she's shaken up herself. And Barbie travels to another state using what little money she has to do one last thing for Wanda even though she's legally not allowed to do anything to help her. They feel like peak friends to lovers to me.

What makes me sad about them: the entire original ending to Game of You. And also that there's again, SO LITTLE CONTENT OF THEM ALMOST NONE. What is it with me and the rarepairs...

things done in fanfic that annoys me: People, give me the fanfic first and then, MAYBE, we can talk. I am starving, do you hear me? There is NOTHING on AO3 and they barely even have their own tag here. I've only ever seen one other person yet besides us even talk about this as a pairing on this hellsite. Period.

things I look for in fanfic: ANYTHING. GOD ANYTHING okay. I would love to see some au fluff but also I want some exploration of the aftermath of their canon adventures and the scars it left them with and what it taught them. But honestly most of all? I want to see Barbie and Wanda still recovering and Wanda's aunt shows up because she saw the building collapse on the news, and she's all concern - but she also calls Wanda her nephew when talking to Barbie, more than once. And Barbie for once is the one to correct her. And when it keeps happening, Barbie is the one to get defensive and protective. Because Wanda usually stands up for herself but her aunt is the last family member who hasn't disowned her, and so she'll put up with more from her, to a point in the hopes that she'll come around and the desire not to lose her. But Barbie can safely defend her without that fear.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: I don't have any other ships I think?

My happily ever after for them: they both live and they ride off into the sunset together, like the ending of the Telephone music video.

who is the big spoon/little spoon: Wanda is the little spoon. She didn't expect this because she's the taller one, but Barbie tends to sprawl in her sleep when she's alone unlike Wanda who likes the fetal position. When she's in bed with someone however Barbie migrates to the heat source and clings. The first night Wanda ended up with Barbie wrapped around her back, warm and soft in one of Wanda's old shirts as pajamas, clutching her around the waist and snoring softly in her ear, Wanda decided this was her favorite way to go to sleep and could never go back. Also Wanda still has nightmares of being suffocated, in the dark, alone, after the building collapse, of a room with blood and a flayed corpse but they tend to come less often when someone's there. And Barbie can usually wake up and tell when Wanda starts whimpering and twitching in her sleep, so she can nudge Wanda out of the nightmare. Wanda isn't used to being the one who's held but maybe now she could be. For her part, Barbie has discovered she likes protecting people. She likes the feeling of being useful, of holding on fiercely and actually fighting for what she wants, for the people she cares for. It's something she had to get used to but a true princess must learn these things. To hold and to comfort the woman she loves, to hold fear and cold at bay...Barbie feels like a knight in shining armor and a princess at the same time. It's a feeling she likes. Also it's the least she can do after all the ways Wanda looks out for her.

what is their favorite non-sexual activity: Watching horror movies, Hallmark and Real Housewives together.
