Bar Boulud
It's yummy. The burgers in particular are yummy. Having tried all three I know now that I will nevermore turn from the 'BB' - Bar Boulud's calling card burger, including shredded ribs and foie gras. Unless, of course, I was having pan seared foie gras (so delicious) to start followed by a steak (more deliciousness). In terms of value for money, this is the type of food that you would like to pay less for but this level of quality will not be found for less in London. Critically, scenery is decidedly average but service can be stellar. It's fun watching the chefs at it in an open kitchen and the fish tank is a nice touch. Plus the loos are shared with the mandarin oriental spa, making them very swanky and worth of a visit while you're there. Not that you'll need prompting if you are as susceptible to your waiter's wine recommendations (Malbec) or off-the-menu cocktails (can I have someting with a slice of passionfruit?), as I am. This is the type of restaurant that will be enjoyed whenever you go but does get busy.
Daniel Boulud
The past two Daniel Boulud restaurants I've been to have had appalling service. This stands out even more because he built his empire on pristine service. Impossible to manage 20+ restaurants and uphold standards? At what point does the focus on craft take a backseat to a drive for profit? No wonder he is losing rating stars left and right. Sad to see one of the first star chefs I admired decline in this way. Rant over.
