Review: Yauatcha
15-17 Broadwick Street London, W1F 0DL
As a Chinese, yum cha (drinking tea) and enjoying dim sum (delicacy of the heart) is part of my blood. I'm very happy to say that this much talked about yum cha place doesn't disappoint (and who can say 'no' to yum cha at night?).
The dim sums are made of fresh seafood and ingredients you wouldn't usually pair with in a standard Chinese restaurant- king crab and lobster dumplings are divine.
Need to say more? Just look at the dessert selection- a food picture tells a thousand salivating moments!
Kurobuta London (Marble Arch)
A new izakaya (loosely means casual drink establishment after work for the Japanese) opened in Connaught Village, West London by two Aussie chefs who used to work at Nobu. We thought it'd be an appropriate place to try given the Nobu background as well as supporting fellow Aussies!
As soon as you walk in, you can sense the casual vibe they want to achieve, with high rise tables for groups and proper sit down tables if you want a sit down meal. The whole place is decorated with hanging lights. But, I couldn't see any Japanese influence in the decor (like there is at Bone Daddies and Flesh & Buns).
I loved the flamed edamame with sake, lemon, butter and maldon salt- it was an interesting fix of flavours for the often consumed beans. The pork buns also deserve a noticeable mention- the peanut soy sauce was flavoursome and thick, complimented nicely with the fattiness from the succulent pork belly.
Other dishes we tried, such as baby shrimp tempura with spicy mayo and warm ponzu dipping sauces and tuna sashimi pizza with truffle ponzu, red onions and green chillies whilst as nice as they were seemed to lack the "kick" of chillies and spicy respectively.
The food weren't bad, in fact few pleasant surprises, but seemed overpriced for what they were. If you are after something new to try then give this place a try- it won't be a bad experience (except for few hiccups in service).
Review: Wright Brother Spitalfields
Allow me to indulge a little :)
Back in March I went to the newly opened Wright Brothers in Spitalfields. I wrote a short review on Yelp, and it got selected for their weekly newsletter on seafood!
Can't be more exciting than this!
AMAZING fresh seafood! The oyster bar cold served food was great, matched perfectly by the chef's delicious daily seafood menu. I had a great time eating by the oyster bar and seeing the food prepared. Recommend trying the large crab (the small isn't ideal for sharing!), oysters (raw!) and char grilled squid! But if you are undecided or stuck, there are plenty of friendly staff to help you and you won't be disappointed!
