Summary:

Birthdays always bring the perfect opportunity to look into the future and see everything you’ve accomplished…

…wait, aren’t you supposed to reflect on the past when you turn one year older?

It’s the 15th of Kavouras, Barbatos’ birthday, and while he’s taking a stroll in town to kill time until night arrives, he finds a lost boy whom he knows quite well. On the day his existence in this world is celebrated, the past meets the present, and Barbatos will have to look after the lost boy until his time to go back home comes; because it’s never too late to heal your inner child.

This story belongs to my “Born with a broken heart” series and it serves as closure to it.

“R-right… well, then, as long as you don’t strain yourself and just rest, you should be fine, then! So, so just focus on that! Forget what I just said!” Finally gaining some semblance of control over her own expression, Chastille pulled her hands from her face. Her voice still shook, just a bit. “I took the rest of the day off, too, so if you need anything please don’t hesitate to ask me for it.”

“You? Taking a day off?” 

“Yes?” she tipped her head to the side, then smiled a little more easily. Her gentle expression was something his uncharacteristically delicate constitution couldn’t handle, and so he looked away instantly. “I keep telling you I want to repay you for all you’ve done for me until now. So, I decided I’d take care of you today. Heh, what was that about overworking?”

Even when the whole kidnapping problem was over, his next impression of Chastille was that of an object to keep safe for a job - one that was far too easily poisoned, but fun to laugh at when Zagan’s dragon daughter chucked frogs in her face. 

Come to think of it, maybe something started to grow there - but, while not as sadistic and callous as living sacrifice, he was hardly endeared and more entertained than anything. It makes him wonder, flipping through his memories, when his moment was. What was it that flipped the switch, that really made that into this. 

He knows he loved her long before he realized it, “love” being a mere revelation for the deeply uncomfortable and unknown feeling that had slowly started to increase in intensity the closer they became.

But he can’t say how much time, or remember when the tight feeling of “love” wrapped around his heart like a snake.
