I’m exhausted, Im sunburned (it was supposed to be rainy!!!), but I finally got a gold medal!!
I’ve got an archery tournament this weekend - the same one that was my first ever tournament last year. At that point I signed up despite never having shot outdoors. I wasn’t even sure I could shoot outdoor distances, but registration was cheap and I like supporting my local range. They put a few of us in a special “novice” division with shorter distances, and I still only scored 26/300 at 50yds on tournament day. 🤣 Still got a silver medal, though, since there were only two of us novice barebow shooters.
This year I’m experienced, prepared, and shooting with better equipment. There’s still only two people in my division (I’m an old lady now, so I’m in the “Senior Games”), so the worst I can do is still a silver, but my hope is to finally take gold. I’ve gotten silver at literally every tournament I’ve entered - indoor, outdoor, big, small, Renaissance faire, doesn’t matter - and it would be really cool to finally top a podium.
Everyone at the range that said they just snap off the pieces of break off points with pliers was either lying or they’ve got superpowers I don’t know about.
First club practice of outdoor season. Beautiful spring weather, not too much wind, brand new carbon arrows instead of the aluminum I was using last year, four pounds heavier limbs than I ended with in October… it’s a whole new world! Didn’t even have to chase down a single arrow today! Plus with the cooler temps and not being on propranolol, I didn’t feel like I was about to pass out or puke at any moment!
He’s not making it easier to change my nocks.
I’ve been noticing it’s been kind of a long time since the recurve coach at the range has given me any form adjustments to work on. Like, several months. So I asked him at club practice today if there was anything I should be correcting or changing and he said he’s actually impressed with how I’m doing, especially since I shoot barebow like it’s a trad bow (no string walking) and still perform consistently well. And that when he’s looking down the line at everyone’s form, he doesn’t see me doing stuff that needs correction. Which, like, hell yeah! I’ll take it!
And then he picked out a grip thing for me to work on, because there’s always things to tweak. I know there’ll be plenty to pick at when we start outdoor season. But super nice to be told I’m doing well!
Wanna hear something super frustrating?
Had archery club practice today. Was shooting for the last achievement pin before the big three - so I needed a 240/300. My current official high score is 238. Did my two warmup ends blank bale, then hung my target and only shot a 212, but it’s cool. I’ve been missing out on range time because of asthma stuff, so it makes sense I’m not 100%.
But then I kept shooting because we still had time, and when I shoot for my own practice I take pics of all my ends and enter them in a scoring app when I get home. And if I shoot, say, 18 ends total like I did today, I’ll enter the first 10 and the last 10 ends as separate rounds to compare them.
If I could have counted the last 10 ends (the last 2 on the official scoresheet and the 8 practice ones after), I would have scored…
EXACTLY 240.
Look at the adorable keychain one of the other barebow archers at the range gave me!!!
