How to make iced coffee
Dark, bitter liquid is poured into the cup that is decorated in Carmel stripes, contrasted against the ice, and the frozen cubes crackle under the stream. A splash of something white, oat or cream or skim, and a pump or two of something sweet.
Giving it a swirl, it reflects your mind too.
Swirls of Carmel, sweet, dark, bitter… the difference between the one you made and the one you met?
Two emeralds, shiny in the pool of Carmel.
Soft, sweet.
You take a sip
The taste of sweet Carmel that bites back with the bitterness. Cool to the touch, icy.
But You can’t think of the sweet treat now, You have to keep going.
Orders one two three…
Third grade… the snap of a bra strap, the giggle of a boy. He takes a seat next to you.
Your Carmel.
High school. Swirls of dark and bitter overpower the sweetness, but it’s a whole new flavor to enjoy, to appreciate.
But soon…
The ice melts, the milk settles to the top, the Carmel sinks to the bottom.
Something is wrong…
But you can save this.
Pour the layer of melted ice out, and give him a stir.
Trust this process.
Plink a few new cubes into the cup, and give him a few more good stirs- another splash of dark, and he’s good as new.
Fresh.
But then, just as you think you’ve saved it.
Where did you put it? You just had it…
Look here, there… this counter? This table?
You miss the sweet Carmel that used to be by your side. Where did it go?
You search for what feels like days, weeks, months, a year even… and then there it is. It looks to be just as you left it…
Now pick it up
There’s a drip… drip drip drip-
A crack? It looked to be just fine… but there it is, clear as day, a crack in your beloved cup.
You’ve caught it just in time… you can still save him.
Place your hand over the crack- don’t let go. Using your free one, find a new cup. And just like that slowly… carefully… there.
In a new cup.
Good as new.
You can keep him safe now.
Give him another stir… and take that green sharpie in the drawer nearby.
Two emerald eyes on the lid…
and finally, a smile.
And you can breathe and take a sip again.
