“You should know that. No matter how dark it gets, you have him, Alex.”
See how things are I thought I would never even find But then, as magic, you came And here's one thing I should have written on my face "I´m afraid"
Valentin: Barrish, The King!
And so I have this childish and imature Obsession on looking for a soulmate At every step I take on the sidewalk
Valentin: Barrish, The King!
barrish, dream ballet
emily: the other thing is i had a dream about your next piece in my dream it was supposed to be the next piece, but when i woke up i realized it was actually more like barrish redux. wanna hear? me: ahhhh! YES! emily: hee ok. so me and you were having like hang out talk about business time, but you also were holding a rehearsal at the same time (i think youd told them to go work on a part of something on their own), and i was also getting ready for bed at the same time and you were like, come see just part of it, just a rough draft! and i was like… uh, im in a tank top and undies? and you were like ME TOO! it'll be fine, it fits with the piece (HAH) so we go out onto a city street at night and the piece was site specific and traveled to all these cool locations, maybe was supposed to be in brooklyn, not sure. i don’t remember many of the sections but they all had funny names, and there was one where there was supposed to be kind of a windsock looking sculpture of a cat with a flowing tail hanging from a swing set looking thing out over the water and you were trying to decide if it was cheesy or not and i think you'd also fired [XXXXXX] because she kept trying to inject cheesy ideas into the piece (wtf) but i remember there were all these beautiful, improvisational type scores along the water and in more urban settings the last one the dancers came through this low arch out onto the street we'd started on and i was looking at them up close now trying to recognize them all - it was your current 4 plus some other SLC ppl like [XXXXX] and some i didn't know and i remember being really moved and then there was a super moon in the sky, it was giant and the tree branches made black silhouettes against it. that was it! me: AHHHH this is so awesome emily: haha really? me: a barrish dream ballet! emily: i wish i remembered more about the sites and the parts! me: it's like getting the piece processed via your subconscious lol emily: YES totally
Another favorite from barrish. The incredible Leah Ives, photo by Paula Court.
For serious, Leah has talked about wanting to do this for a while now. Looks like someone beat her to the punch...
