Kay hadn’t meant to get caught.
She’s never been caught pickpocketing someone, but this guy had to catch her in the act. He’s almost too good, like he knows the way she operates. Grandpa warned her that humans are tricky, and this is the first one she’s ever met...
She lunges at him with her knife, hoping to at least scare him off, but misses entirely, falling into the railing of the stairs they’re standing on. She’s small, but the railings are smaller, and she realizes with dawning horror that her foot’s caught between them. Crap!
“Stay away from me!” She can’t run, and the human’s just looking at her, which makes her angrier for some reason. She bites and claws at the metal railing, but it’s no use. She’s stuck.
“Leave,” she hisses. “You don’t want to fight me.”
