Old Globe artistic chief Barry Edelstein marks 10th year of summer Shakespeare in Balboa Park

As Shakespeare season opens today, Edelstein looks back on his accomplishments, disappointments and what's still to come

Edelstein has also transformed how the Globe presents Shakespeare’s works on its own stages.

First he oversaw the installation of a $250,000 sound system at the festival theater that made the actors’ words crystal-clear for audiences.

He replaced the repertory company approach of two plays alternating each night from June through September to presenting two independent productions in shorter, 10-week runs. This made it easier for him to attract big-name actors — like Blair Underwood to play Othello and Grantham Coleman to play Hamlet — who are too busy to commit to a five-month rep season.

Theater Notebook: Old Globe unveils yearlong 'Henry VI' Shakespeare project

Globe artistic director Barry Edelstein, a renowned Shakespeare scholar, is writing the adaptation and will direct the “Henry 6" production. James Shapiro, who is Shakespeare Scholar in Residence at New York’s Public Theater and has written several books on the playwright, will serve as a consultant on the project.

To lay the groundwork for “Henry 6,” the Globe will present a yearlong program of free, citywide arts engagement programs and humanities events leading up to the production. To expand access, the Globe also plans to offer reduced-price and free tickets to the plays, and the Globe will offer outreach programs for community members who want to participate in the creation of “Henry 6.”

Theatre Director Barry Edelstein on Making Art with Limitations

On Episode 112 of The Quarantine Tapes, Paul Holdengräber is joined by Barry Edelstein, the artistic director at the Old Globe in San Diego. Barry and Paul explore some of the ways the Old Globe has found to continue making theatre under the restrictions of the pandemic. 

Barry believes that theatre is a public good. He tells Paul about how one of the challenges of the past few months has been discovering how to continue bringing this art form to as wide an audience as possible. Barry and Paul dig into what Barry fears might be lost for theatre in the wake of the pandemic as well as what programming the Old Globe hopes to continue beyond the constraints of this moment.
