My Opinions(tm) regarding the latest Overwatch comic
I described it to a friend as “Morrisson making a very big mistake”. I know that the writers are trying to make us sympathize with a difficult situation that the Commander and all of Overwatch are put into, but… yeah, my boy really fucked that one up.
Let’s see: so, terrorrist activity in Britain leads to this Null Sector omnic group taking over parts of London, threatening the stability of the country. Morrisson sees this and feels “Gee golly, if only those big mean political bureaucrats would let me do MY JOB and stop these bad guys.” So he has a short crysis of consience, ignores calls from his direct superior and from British authorities to not intervene, takes a look at eager-eyed Lena Oxton and how much she trusts the cause they stand for… and promptly sanctions an unauthorized paramilitary op into sovereign territory, in violation of orders and international law.
Remind me again how many times that worked in the past as a means to keep peace in a region?
As someone who has lived in a country continually screwed over by international politics and straight-up American intervention, I don’t appreciate the gesture one bit.
Maybe if like, there hadn’t been a wall-to-wall TV screen detailing Overwatch’s many past fuckups that gradually eroded their credibility, I’d sympathize. Though honestly, I probably wouldn’t.
One thing I would have liked, though, was if they’d gone with Mercy’s idea. She was clealry in favor of intervention, but as a humanitarian effort, moving in to help those wounded in the violence. He could have tried selling that to Petras or the British PM. It would have come across as more “we want to help people” than “durr hurr we’re the world policemen and you’re not letting us fix every problem everywhere forever”.
I couldn’t help notice how Morrisson straight up ignored the notion of non-military action. So yeah, fuck that
