The Audacity of this wild rat to test positive for plague! This isn't the 14th century! 😤
The Dancing Plague of 1518 💃
According to historical accounts, the outbreak began on July 14 when a woman known as Frau Troffea suddenly started dancing in the street. She continued for days with little rest, and before long others began to join her. Within weeks, dozens had become hundreds, all seemingly trapped in the same relentless rhythm.
The city's leaders believed the only cure was to let the victims dance until the illness left their bodies. They hired musicians, built wooden stages, and encouraged the dancing to continue. Instead, the situation only appeared to grow worse as many participants collapsed from exhaustion. Later accounts even claimed that people died from heart failure, stroke, or extreme fatigue, although historians continue to debate how many deaths actually occurred.
No one knows what truly caused the outbreak. Some researchers believe it was a case of mass psychogenic illness brought on by extreme stress, famine, disease, and religious fear. Others have suggested ergot poisoning from fungus growing on rye, though many historians consider that explanation unlikely because it does not fully match the symptoms or duration of the event.
