people don’t seem to understand that while free speech exists and is obviously a very important thing for very good reasons, that doesn’t really apply to private businesses, or means that there won’t be any consequences for certain free speech.
Dave Portnoy (who is Jewish himself, I might add) has every right to fire anyone who was involved in the “fuck Jews” sign incident earlier. Dave is also allowed to be upset about it. you can feel free to say or do whatever you want, but then you can’t complain when the owner of a private business that you work for decides to punish you for it.
only saying this because I’ve seen a lot of people whining about free speech because of the incident at that barstool bar. no, what free speech means is that the government can’t punish you for saying “fuck the Jews” or any other religious group. and they shouldn’t be able to. because as much as I disagree with that statement, it’s still free speech. private businesses, however, don’t have to follow that.
