Columnar Basalts in Hofsós, North Iceland

I have come across, ever so briefly during my geology studies this year, the awareness of the existence of columnar basalts and reasons for their occurrence. I immediately found them stunning in their natural monumental presence and geometric perfection.

Without knowing where I would find them exactly here in Iceland, I knew they were here, somewhere.

It was cycling into the tiny village of Hofsós,at around 2:30 am three days ago, and looking for a place to camp (the side of the cliff was looking like an exciting place to set up the tent) which is when I saw them stand prominently infront of me, on the side of the cliff! Beautiful columnar basalts ... everywhere. 

The earth seemed to be frozen in a dynamic musical organ... the long columns reminiscent of pipes and towers of ancient cities of the earth, predating any form of man's architectural interpretations of nature.
