It’s getting darker earlier, yet little ones seem to be just as squirmy as ever. Here are some of our favorite places to go with younger kids in Basalt and Carbondale. Perfect picks to tide us over during the late-fall and winter season, especially if the slopes aren’t exactly calling their name or you’ve got fair-weather skiers on your hands.

Basalt Library // With multiple story times during the week and a Saturday drop-in Crafter Day, the downtown library is a perfect go-to on a cold day. Separate story times for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers offers up a chance to learn and play with kids their own age. Check calendar for details on days and time. MORE INFO
Rock Bottom Ranch // Every Friday in the winter (except the day after Thanksgiving), they host Family Farm Tours for a small donation. Come rain or shine (or sleet or snow) and learn about the livestock, hoop houses, and gardens. Interactive and fun for kids of all ages. MORE INFO
Handmakery // With a plethora of classes and special events throughout the year, little ones will love getting their hands on some curated arts and crafts time. Mini Maker Mornings are perfect for little ones and older kids can participate in after-school classes. Carbondale Library // With weekly story time for preschoolers and toddlers, this is the perfect opportunity to get out and socialize. Perfectly timed before lunch and that afternoon nap, you’ll be glad you got out. Be sure to check their website for important details on story time. MORE INFO
Glenwood Hot Springs // Not exactly Basalt or Carbondale, but worth the trip! Head into Glenwood for a family-friendly dip at the hot springs pool. Children under three are free and they even offer group swim lessons during certain periods of the year. Be sure to check their website, as they do close five days a year for maintenance. MORE INFO
