Give | Mother’s Day

This year, Mother’s Day can be more than gifts and goods (although, a few surprises to unwrap are always welcome!). We’ve rounded up four easy options for children to celebrate with their mom, no matter the age and even from afar.

1. Front Door Décor | Give your mom’s front door a refresh, with a new wreath, some pretty porch blossoms, or even a new doormat. The perfect pick-me-up that can double up as a safe visit (if you need to keep your distance!) and a fun surprise. Something she’ll certainly enjoy for longer than one day.

2. Backyard Picnic | Skip the breakfast in bed this year and treat your mom to a backyard picnic, complete with a charcuterie board, a simple salad, and some bubbly rosé. Bonus points if you can pick some pretty flowers, put out some nice linens, and cue up her favorite tunes.

3. Virtual Happy Hour | We know, we’re ready to add virtual distancing to our to-do list with all these calls. But, we think this is one day mom will really want to see you show up! Schedule a call and then surprise her by dressing up as her, re-creating one of her looks (and hairdos!) of the past.

4. Picture Perfect | If you haven’t done a porch picture yet, grab the camera, set the timer, and take one now. She’ll want a memory of this moment in time. Older kids? Get creative and recreate a photo memory of the past for a good laugh! Then send them our way. We want to see how creative you can get!

Make | Grand Marnier Slushies

You can take the girl away from her travels, but you can’t take the tastes of some of her favorite places away from her. We’re talking about Kaleigh Kirkpatrick of The Shameless Tourist and her behind-the-scenes cooking and cocktail expertise!

She recently made Grand Marnier Slushies, a favorite from the France Pavilion at Epcot, and she shared the recipe with us. 

Grand Marnier Slushies

Ingredients: 1 Part Vodka 1 Part Grand Marnier 2 Parts Sweet and Sour Mix 1 Part Simple Syrup (I personally like less Simple Syrup in it than this!)

Directions: Blend with Ice and Serve!

Easter Activities at Home

Hop to it! School and activities may be cancelled, but no one can take away a holiday. Knowing we will all be social distancing and celebrating small this Easter, we compiled this list of activities you can do with your family at home, or some you can do virtually with friends afar. 

1. Paint Wooden Easter Eggs | Order some wooden eggs (hard to find locally right now) and pull out your favorite art medium, such as watercolors, markers, oil pastels. With real eggs in high demand, this is the perfect eco-conscious activity for families with little ones. Plus, next year when you pull then out you’ll have a colorful memory of Easter 2020 (although, maybe you’ll want to forget).

2. Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt | Flip it in reverse this year. Give your kids a few plastic eggs and send them off to fill them with whatever they can find in Mother Nature. 

3. Easter Bingo on Zoom | Schedule time with family anywhere in the world and play a round (or two) of bingo. We love these printable cards. Have one person be your caller with the name of each square inside a plastic egg and make sure everyone playing is using an assortment of the bingo cards!

4. Jelly Bean Sort | Give each player the same number of jelly beans in an assortment of colors, with one cup or bowl for each color. The first person to sort their jelly beans correctly wins!

5. Basket Ribbon Hunt | Have little ones at home that are expecting the Easter bunny? Tie a ribbon or string on their bedpost and make them chase it through the house to where their basket is hiding. Bonus points if you multiple kids and their ribbons cross paths!

10 Ways to Live, Love, Local

1. Eat well. Don’t forget that you can order takeout or delivery from our local restaurants. As we spend time at home helping to #flattenthecurve, the pantry might start to look uninspiring and a fresh meal is just a phone call away. Such as coffee, pastries and fresh juices in Aspen. And this local meal delivery service that will provide you with a week’s worth of food straight from the rainbow.

2. Buy gift cards. Purchase now and use them in the future, for yourself or as a gift to someone. Even $10 in the pocket of a local business can make a lasting impression.

3. Say thank you. Extend gratitude to the local employees that keep our towns running. Grocery store workers, the trash company, our police, firefighters, and valued medical professionals on the front line. Let’s not forget the food and beverage industry teammates - don't hesitate to tip well (20% or more).

4. Shop online from our local retailers. Some businesses without e-commerce sites are even showing their wares and goods on Instagram. And consider whether or not you can purchase something from a local business before you opt to shop online from a national retailer, such as wine!

5. Take time for self-care. Rest up with a soothing bath, open up a book, and spend some time relaxing. Now is the time to be with your immediate family and nurture the relationship with yourself and the connections with one another. Mental health resources are available.

6. Be supportive. Whether it’s offering to pick up dinner for your physician neighbor or writing a glowing online review for the businesses you visited last month. We are a community that cares for one another.

7. Move it. Many gyms and studios have moved to online class offerings. Join in on the sweaty fitness fun from home. Join us in committing to getting in 10,000 steps a day and moving our bodies no less than 30 minutes daily.

8. Plan for the future. Hotels are closing, but just for now. Look at your future calendar and schedule an opportunity to check out of your house (you know you’ll be sick of looking at the same four walls soon, anyways) and into a local hotel for a night or two of complete rest and relaxation of the tourist variety. Consider now an opportunity to get your house in order. Organize, clean, check off that to-do list, and review your insurance. Anything you can do now is beneficial for your future self.

9. Opt outside. Whether you go for a bike ride, a hike, or skin up the hill, just be sure to practice safe social distancing. We are so fortunate to live where we do and be able to enjoy the fresh, mountain air.

10. Stay social. Online. This is the time to put the social back in media. Consider the Marco Polo app for group chats and updates, connect with loved ones over Cocoon, and set up virtual happy hours with Zoom. Colorado Locals’ Rate in Snowmass and Aspen

Staycation season is upon us and the Limelight hotels in both Snowmass and Aspen have a great locals’ rate for Colorado residents. Pack a bag, check-in, and let someone else make the bed for a morning (or more) while you play tourist for the day. 

Valid March 29 through April 18, 2020, as well as May 21 through June 17, 2020, the Limelight in Snowmass is offering rooms for as low as $165/night for spring travel and $115/night for their early summer dates. All you need is a valid Colorado ID at check-in. 

The Limelight Aspen is also in on this deal, offering locals’ rates from April 19 through June 16.

Spring Travel Local Destinations

In the mood for a trip but want to avoid the airport or the hassle of flying somewhere right now? We’re with you this spring season. We asked Kaleigh Kirkpatrick of The Shameless Tourist for some destination inspiration a step above a staycation. All within driving distance of Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley. Pack your bags, load the car, and hit the road to these hot spots.

A Half-Day Drive from Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley

Dunton Hot Springs | This romantic 1800s ghost town has been restored into private cabins, complete with hot springs and an on-site lounge and restaurant. This is mountain luxury at its finest. Prepare to get off the grid and take a step back in time.

Hoodoo Moab | Kaleigh notes that this brand new Hilton hotel is, “such a nice property at a great price.” You can easily visit Arches National Park by day and enjoy the pool and on-site restaurant by night.

The Broadmoor | A Colorado classic, this resort features great amenities and is close to Pikes Peak, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and Seven Falls. With plenty of room options, a bounty of restaurants to choose from, and activities such as golf, pool, and tennis, this is an easy staycation spot the whole family will enjoy.

Madeline | For a different ski scenery, Kaleigh recommends the Madeline in Telluride. This ski-in/ski-out Auberge property even has a private kids lounge and an ice rink. Bonus: This could easily pair up with a stay at Dunton Hot Springs.

A Full-Day Drive from Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley

Four Seasons Santa Fe | Kaleigh notes that she loves this property, “for families staying a little longer and looking to do more outdoor things.” Located just a bit outside the city, it has more of a resort feel.

Brush Creek Ranch | Head north to Wyoming and settle into a ranch if you’re looking for a place that has a larger feel than Dunton Hot Springs. This all-inclusive 5-star property sits on 30,000 panoramic acres and offers an authentic ranch experience for the whole family.

Lodge at Blue Sky | Park City is just a state away and this Western getaway is easy to call home for a few days. A contemporary, luxury resort, it’s considered an outdoor playground. Make a day of the area with nearby skiing and downtown Park City, which features some of the best local shopping and dining around.

St. Regis Deer Valley | With access to Deer Valley Resort right outside the doors, this mountainside property features fire pits, a Remède spa, and picturesque views of the Wasatch Mountains. The perfect place to be a tourist for a long weekend.

Amangiri | Saving the best for last, Kaleigh notes that this property, “would be the most amazing place.” The longest drive of the staycation round-up, it is worth every minute. This futuristic, luxury resort is set on 600 acres in the heart of Canyon Point in Southern Utah. Close to the historic Grand Canyon and Insta-famous Antelope Canyon, this stunning staycation is a sophisticated desert oasis.

Snowmass Wine and Dine

After a long day of skiing, hiking, or biking, it’s more than nice to be able to grab a quick bite with friends or stay local to the village for the night. From pizza with the kids to a date night out, we’ve rounded up four of our favorite restaurants to dine at in Snowmass. 

Base Camp Bar and Grill | This modern mountain gastro-pub overlooks Snowmass Mountain and the patio beckons skiers and hikers alike to take a break and have a cold one. With a full menu of salads, sandwiches, and burgers, there is something for everyone in your group. And you can even partake in their Tuesday samplings of local brews, whiskeys, and rum.

Slice | Pizzas and classic Italian fare fill the menu at this second-floor spot. With incredible daytime views that are patio-worthy, the entire family can fuel up here. Plus, you can always call in a pizza order to go.

Saké | This Pan Asian and sushi restaurant has one of the most extensive saké lists we’ve ever seen. Pleasing even the pickiest of eaters, they offer everything from rolls to traditional rice, noodles, and pan-cooked dishes. Open daily during the season for aprés and dinner, reservations are encouraged. 

State 38 | Named after the 38th state added to the Union, this restaurant serves up fine American cuisine with a focus on Colorado-sourced ingredients. With a lounge, patio, and dining room, there are options from an impromptu happy hour to a mountain atmosphere dinner with friends. And if you are looking for a private dining room, theirs features a cozy fireplace and can hold up to 24 guests. 

All of these locally-owned restaurants can be found at the base of Snowmass Village. Live, love, eat, and enjoy local! And have a bite for us. Delish.

Downvalley Drinks with Woody Creek Distillers

Tucked away in Basalt is a building that houses some of the finest local spirits around. We’re talking about Woody Creek Distillers, home to vodka, whiskey, gin, and bourbon locally sourced, grown, and bottled right here in the Roaring Fork Valley. While you can always grab a bottle from your local liquor store, it’s a visit to their tasting room that satisfies taste buds all over town.

From their farm to your happy hour, a stop at WCD is the embodiment of living, loving, and enjoying local. All their grains are sourced from trusted Colorado farms and they grow their own Rio Grande potatoes for their premium vodka. They distill every spirit they make. As they say, come pull up a chair and, “enjoy Colorado’s best damn spirits.” 

Their tasting room is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12-7 pm and features a bar area, plus a comfy lounge to gather for a happy hour. And their knowledgable staff makes the experience that much better.

WCD is often noted as a favorite place for visitors to stop. As one reviewer recently commented, “Probably the best place in the valley you haven’t been to yet.” We couldn’t agree more.

Do yourself a favor and stop by this hidden gem and enjoy a craft cocktail. Then grab a bottle to go to replicate the experience at home.

A Week With Good Clean Food Delivered

Have you ever walked through the grocery store with a cart that you were proud of? Full of bright produce and fresh foods that practically screamed, “look at me and how healthy I am!” With my busy life, it seems to be rare that I have those proud cart moments. All too often, I am looking for quick and convenient and grabbing something pre-made or boxed on the shelf.

Who has time to chop all those veggies and prep all those Insta-worthy meals? It turns out Good Clean Food Delivered does. I had the chance to try out a week, and if I could sum it up in one word, it would be OBSESSED. Here is a quick summary of what my week looked and tasted like.

Let’s start with the fridge factor. I cleared out some room for my food and every time I opened that door, it made me happy. Look at this! All that fresh food. All that color. I wanted to invite the whole neighborhood to come and see. To reward myself for such a healthy fridge, I went ahead and snacked on the Clean Candied Sesame Crunch. Delish.

I started my first morning with this Pumpkin Pie Chia Pudding. Don’t let the word “pumpkin” scare you. This is not like one of those over-spiced and over-priced drinks from a certain coffee place. This is a subtle, delicious, and creamy pudding that does double duty as a dessert option. But I ate it for breakfast. Because who doesn’t love dessert for breakfast? Plus, it is full of protein and healthy fats and kept me happy all morning long.

For lunch, I ate 1/2 of the Asian Chopped Salad (as shown on the right side of this photo). You can eat it cold or hot, so I ate it cold the first day. Quick, delicious, and oh, that peanut sauce was the perfect finishing touch. The next day I heated up the other 1/2 for lunch and it was even better warm on a cold winter day. The broccoli, carrots, cabbage, and edamame warmed up nicely in a pan with the rice.

That other jar, you wonder? That is Taco Night. A black bean and sweet potato combo with brown rice and cabbage slaw. That whole jar easily feeds two or makes you two meals. A squeeze of lime (provided!) and some gluten-free tortillas made this my favorite jar of the week!

All the fresh food is bound to make you full, in a healthy and satisfying way. But, when that 3 PM snack urge hits, you will be prepared. A rainbow of fresh crudité and two of the most delicious dips ever - “Can’t Beet It” Hummus and Cilantro-Pepita Pesto - will have you coming back for seconds. There were plenty of veggies and enough dip to last me a few days, and any extra pesto was put to good use with scrambled eggs for breakfast or over a bowl of pasta later in the week.

The rest of the week I noshed on their soups, easy to warm up and eat at any time of day. The Creamy Chickpea Dahl was warming and I loved the Butternut Squash and Pumpkin Curry. The sriracha roasted pumpkin seeds added the perfect crunch.

Not pictured, the Signature Salad and Smoothies. All delicious! Honestly, this was one of my best weeks ever. I ate the entire rainbow, was often full and felt like I always had fresh, clean food ready for me when hunger would strike. The hardest part? Saying goodbye to that last bite of beet hummus.
