Charlevoix, Michigan A small USCG boat makes its way under the raised US 31 Island Lake Outlet Bridge. The channel one sees here was dredged in 1870 to connect Lake Charlevoix with Lake Michigan. It is also known as the Pine River Channel.

This double-leaf bascule lift bridge, completed in 1949, is the fifth iteration to span the gap at this location. It goes up every hour and half-hour during the summer to let boats make their way to the “big lake” as we call in in these parts.

Slauerhoff Bridge. The Slauerhoffbrug (English: Slauerhoff Bridge) is a fully automatic bascule bridge (aka tail bridge) in the city of Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. The bridge uses two arms to swing a section of road in and out of place. The deck is 15 m by 15 m. It is painted in yellow and blue, representative of Leeuwarden's flag and seal. This movable bridge is also known as the “Slauerhoffbrug ‘Flying’ Drawbridge”. One of the main designers is Emile Asari. A tail bridge can quickly and efficiently be raised and lowered from one pylon (instead of hinges). This quickly allows water traffic to pass while only briefly blocking road traffic.
