David Ortiz was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on November 18, 1975. A standout baseball and basketball player in his youth, be befriended future teammate Pedro Martinez and caught the attention of Major League Baseball in 1992. Ortiz was signed to a minor league baseball contract with the Seattle Mariners just a few days after his 17th birthday. Ortiz made a major impression and quickly rose through the ranks in the Mariner’s farm system. He was traded to the Minnesota Twins in 1996 and later made his Major League Baseball debut in 1997.
He played for the Twins for five years as a solid though unspectacular player and was released after the 2002 season. However, his friend and Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez convinced his team to sign Ortiz, as Boston was incidentally in need of a first baseman and additional hitting power.
Ortiz made a big impression in his first year with the Red Sox, helping them make it to the American League Championship Series before falling to the rival New York Yankees in seven games, Undeterred, Ortiz and the Red Sox returned for another postseason run in 2004. Ortiz quickly established himself as one of the team’s key players and helped the team to another postseason run, hitting the game-winning home run in Game 3 of the American League Division Series to face the Yankees in a rematch in the ALCS. Down 0-3, with the season on the line, Ortiz delivered two back-to-back game winning hits in games 4 and 5. The Red Sox later defeated the Yankees in seven games, pulling off an unprecedented feat as Ortiz was named series MVP. The Red Sox later swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, winning their first World Series title since 1918.
Ortiz again helped the team win another World Series championship in 2007 and played a key role in the team’s ensuing seasons. In 2013, Ortiz displayed his postseason heroics again in the 2013 ALCS against the Detroit Tigers and later helped the Red Sox defeat the Cardinals in the 2013 World Series, being named World Series MVP. After a few more seasons, Ortiz retired after the 2016 season with the Red Sox.
