Michael Clifford stood at the chain-link fence, camera pressed to his face, lens trained on the mound.
The sky hung dark and heavy overhead, thick with the kind of clouds that suggested rain but didn't deliver. Silver Creek's baseball field stretched out before him, empty except for the players warming up in the hazy glow of the park's lights. Michael had been here a hundred times before, always in this same spot, always watching from the edges where he belonged.
He zoomed in.
Luke Hemmings stood on the pitcher's mound like he'd been built for it. Like someone had sculpted him specifically for this moment, this uniform, and this field. He was all long limbs and sharp angles, lean in a way that seemed almost improbable for a baseball pitcher until you noticed his arms — the kind of arms that made other boys look away and girls forget their own names. They were good arms. Greek statue arms. The kind of arms that belonged in museums or on magazine covers, not attached to a senior who still had acne scars on his jaw and a habit of chewing his bottom lip when he was nervous.
Michael lowered the camera for a moment, letting it hang from the strap around his neck.
He didn't think about Luke's arms. He didn't think about the way Luke's blonde hair shone against the lights or the way his shoulders moved when he wound up for a pitch. That was the kind of thinking that got you labeled, and Michael had spent too long being invisible to suddenly become visible for the wrong reasons.
