In 1976, the #Whitesox wore shorts to the field. In a game where long pants are not just the norm, but a necessity because you don't want to slide in home unprotected, the White sox, led by Bill Veeck who was also credited as the man who had the great idea of putting the name of the players in the back of their jerseys, and a lot of other stuff that we really have to talk about later, to bring back a look that only had been seen in a minor league team from the 50's, the "Hollywood Stars", and thus, dubbed the uniform "Hollywood shorts". And the players went with it, even if the shorts themselves were only worn in two games. In fact, the second baseman Jack Brohamer is quoted as saying that he'd only wear his shorts if they let him also wear a halter top with them. They debuted the shorts in August 8, 1976, beating the Royals 5-2 even if the Royals had been winning a lot more games than the Sox that season and of course mocked the shorts all they could. And yet, the Sox won. And so they did the second time they wore the shorts, this time against the Orioles 11-10, on August 21. Unfortunately, third time was not the charm and they lost the next and last game they wore the shorts, on August 22. Even MORE unfortunately, while the Sox have donned the Jerseys that went with the shorts a couple of times since, they have never again wore their Hollywood shorts and shown us their great legs. Here, Hands from my webcomic #Travelingseers, models what would've been the TS's uniform had the shorts fashion caught on!
