I really like Hangman's character but there's not much we know about him compared to a character like Bradley. So we have to essentially profile him based on his behavior.
I'm just spitballing here because I haven't dived deeply into the script and Glen Powell's tgm interviews. I just watched the movie a bunch.
I think Jake comes from a traditional family, possibly distinguished. Maybe his family comes from a long line of military men. His father is an authoritarian, disciplinarian and military man. He feels the need to live up to what his father wants of him and is therefore afraid of him. He loves his mother but feels stifled by her so he has a weird relationship with women. He was raised in a patriarchal family but his mother held power over him. He has older brothers that he feels compeled to compete against because of his family dynamics. He lives life constantly fighting for his place in the hierarchy of his family.
