So what would it take, hypothetically speaking, to turn a shy but eager choirboy like Jirv into a jaded, I lost my faith and if God even exists, He doesn't give a damn anyway ex-choirboy? Stranded in the arctic with tuunbaq sicced on his ass is not enough, apparently, so what gives?
Re: Netflix P&P. I kinda want a "racebent" Bingley (obviously racebending the Bennets would be bad optics). I would say the same for Darcy, but we know the fanbase would riot and claim that Netflix had made Lizzy look racist, even if her objections had nothing to do with race.
Hmm. It's true that choosing a specific character or family to racebend could trip into some obvious problems. I saw a lot of very valid criticisms about the focus on racebending the Musgroves in the Netflix Persuasion, for instance, with an obvious contrast to the more central and narratively valorized Anne and Wentworth; like, a white Elizabeth reducing everything about a racebent Darcy to his pride could easily slip into racism if done poorly. But the Bingleys' kind of trashy origins (by standards of the time) and his sisters' hypocrisy etc could also make them dubious choices for a lone exception to the usual overwhelming whiteness of period-set Austen adaptations. And I remain wary of shunting those opportunities off to supporting and minor cast while continually keeping the romantic leads or protagonists white.
Personally, I think the most obvious way to avoid the problems of token POC casting in an Austen adaptation is to avoid tokenizing casting practices in the first place. There was a stage version of P&P awhile back that cast all the characters with Black actors, for instance, and a lot of the potential issues were much more easily avoided. Netflix wouldn't have the spine to do that, but I think that, say, something compelling and not at all racist could still be done if they weren't restricting their "diverse casting" to a small number of lesser roles.
Just as an example, there's a lot of both subtle and unsubtle mirroring between the extended Gardiner and Fitzwilliam families, even if the core families are so removed from each other in class terms that they only pull Elizabeth and Darcy further apart. If all the Gardiners by birth (Mr Gardiner, the little Gardiners, Mrs Phillips, Mrs Bennet, all five Bennet girls) and all the Fitzwilliams (Lady Catherine, Anne, Colonel Fitzwilliam, Darcy, Georgiana) were racebent in similar ways and it was actually done well, I think it would be very possible to avoid pitfalls. But if it's, say, Darcy alone or even Darcy and Georgiana alone, it's going to be more complicated to navigate. (Of course, I doubt Netflix would ever cast that many major roles with actors of color, but it absolutely could be done. A lot of problems are better addressed with opening up more roles and writing them well rather than closing them off.)
I'd also say that the rioting of bad faith audiences might well make Netflix less likely to open up roles to POC, but I don't think it means they should. But they definitely would need to do more to support their actors wrt those kinds of reactions than these kinds of studios usually do. The backlash always happens when a very culturally famous and traditionally very white narrative isn't quietly or loudly restricted to white actors, it's as predictable as a sunrise, so leaving the cast out to dry and calling it a day like e.g. Disney has consistently done with people like Kelly Marie Tran and Amandla Stenberg isn't acceptable.
@blakelywintersfield for some reason tumblr hasn't been letting me post >:[ I hope this works but anyways, I'm very paranoid about posting anything about my little 'theory' bc it's all purely based on hypotheticals & I'd have to put it under like a million disclaimers about how we know nothing about gerard's personal life etc. so yeah <3 I'm very sorry I can't satisfy your curiosity
god i have such a good idea for the set up for a plot and i’ve already written literally 5k but i have no idea what happens in the middle or at the end
I'm currently riding the pain train that is your amor fati, just starting chapter 5. I was sneak reading the downloaded version at work and had to stop because I was about to start crying in front of my co-workers. But...i love it i love it i love it. Hurts so good! I can already tell it will be one of my favorites ever (especially since I know if will have a happy ending!)
AHHH HELLO
i return to AMOR FATI the most, i think, of any of the Nonsense. so make of that what you will. like GRAY AREAS is my most precious and probably the most clever plot-wise; and I think UNCURLING LIFELINES had the most to say; but I really love AMOR FATI, especially because the idea behind it was so unpopular, LOL. I like how it turned out, a lot.
it’s funny because i hear a lot from people on how the Nonsense is horribly sad, but I think it has to be, to get to the ending it has. like it’s brutally honest, so it’s sad. these are not happy people. so they have to learn how to move on and become better people. Cassian especially; that’s so much psychological trauma, and a life of horrific deeds, and poor justification. so it’s rough.
so I wanted to earn my happy ending! earn it. i think i did. :)
anyway i am DELIGHTED you are reading AMOR FATI [is this your first foray into the Nonsense? godspeed.] i am very excited and touched, let me know how it goes!
c.c. @leaiorganas look at what you have done, u HERO. here is the great moodboard @leaiorganas made for the story, i will never ever recover or stop talking about this
what is smallville?? whats it abt?? should i binge watch rn??
oh. OOOOOOOH MY GOD
i don’t know if i’m remotely prepared to answer this
Smallville is, essentially, the unofficial(?) tv origin story for Superman. It’s Clark Kent, starting as like a……sophomore in high school and leading up to him becoming Superman. So a lot of the earlier seasons are him discovering his powers and trying to be a regular dude and then later on you see the actual Superman setup with the Daily Planet and the telephone booth and costumes and it’s so fantastic. It’s hilarious and goofy as hell - it’s a superhero show! -and way, way cheesy at times and if you watch it all at once it’s a LOT - 10 seasons - but it’s also really charming and sweet and heartfelt. And it has Tom Welling as Clark, which is pretty much reason enough to watch it because he is….mhm…. so good looking. And if you happen to prefer more of the ladies, it has Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang, the light of my life (seriously, don’t trust people if they hate on Lana for no reason, she did nothing to deserve it) for almost all the seasons, and then, in season 4, we get Erica Durance as Lois Lane, the love of my life. And then we get clois building up, which is just….god. I watched Smallville live when it first aired, and clois was my otp of otps before I even knew what an otp was. Their dynamic and the way they grow and change with each other is just incredible and I just…..I love them so much. Smallville clois is the reason I love any version of clois with all my heart it’s such a fantastic relationship and I can’t say enough good things.
(and also there’s so many little comic shout-outs and stupid ‘freak of the week’ plots to entertain and SO many people who guest starred/had a supporting role who went on to be in other shows and it’s hilarious to see. also Michael Rosenbaum as Lex is hilarious and Justin Harley - pre This Is Us! - is the Green Arrow we deserved)
