Basil I was an emperor of the Byzantine Empire in the 9th century. He was born a peasant, but thanks to luck, he was able to enter the household of and work as a groom (stableman) for a relative of the then-emperor Michael III. Eventually, he was able to impress them with his strength and ability, and he was endowed with riches and rose within the ranks of society, even gaining the notice of and becoming a close companion of Michael III.
Despite this rags-to-riches story, however, Basil was not free of scheming and committed the act of murdering his emperor after a party held by Michael III himself, at his own household. After brandishing the head of his former benefactor on a pike across town, Basil proclaimed himself emperor.

My thoughts! Although it's challenging to create art so that it's historically accurate, there are a bunch of things that I wanted to research for this artwork. First, I wanted to know what Basil looks like. Unfortunately, there's not a lot going for his portrait, and you only have this. As for his clothing, I based it off Basil II who was a descendant of his, a century later. I also researched his surroundings by looking at pictures of Byzantium in those days, and also the cobblestone floor.
This took me hours, days to finish, but throughout I kept telling myself that I can do it, and I'm proud of the result.

今回は歴史的なの話を少しさせて頂きたいと思います。こちらに描かれてるのはビザンチン帝国のバジル1世と言います。実はバジル皇帝は百姓の家庭で生まれました。幸運や努力のおかげで、本人が別当として働き、指導力を持つ人にいい印象を残し、世間での立場がどんどん上手く行きました。しかし、バジルは悪いこともして、陰謀に加わりました。歴史で本人について最も書かれているのは、バジルが当時の皇帝マイケル3世を暗殺したことです。それ以降、バジルが皇帝になりビザンチン帝国が平和な時代を通ったらしいですが、それはプロパガンダかもしれないという。

All I want right now is a series of extremely filthy novels about how this dude fucked his way into being emperor of Byzantine. Like other sources I have suggest that this is an extremely sanitized version of his life. For one thing he married at least one and possibly two different guys (apparently sources disagree) and was almost certainly having sex with emperor mike before he murdered him. As I don't currently have a computer its up to one of you okay? Because I can't stop thinking about it.
