On Basilisk Station by David Weber

On Basilisk Station is David Weber’s entry into his critically acclaimed and completely awesome Honorverse series set in the far future where man has mastered hypserspace travel and human aging. The Honorverse is a classic science fiction space opera that shows the horrible side of war and is full of original and deep characters who grow throughout the whole series.

In this entry novel we are introduced to Honor Harrington, the series main protagonist, who is taking command of her first cruiser. She is a strong female character (both in character and physical prowess). She is accompanied by her companion Nimitz who is a treecat (sentient, 6-limbed, empathic feline) from her native planet Sphinx in the Manticore system.

This book also introduces the main underlying plot for the rest of the series, the conflict between the People’s Republic of Haven and the Star kingdom of Manticore. Haven is a corrupt government which is in a period of expansion, they have been gobbling up all the smaller planets and systems around them, and Manticore is next on their list. Unlike any of Haven’s previous targets, Manticore has the technology and skill to fight back to survive.

The Honorverse series is a very nice blend of space and personal combat, political intrigue, and hard science fiction. I recommend it for any and all science fiction fans. This book gets a rare 10 on the d10 of scoring for being the opening novel in one of the best Science Fiction series on the market today and for being a strong book by itself.
