To be honest I think a lot of white Americans are fucked up because we dont realize that we have culture outside of being American.
Like, all throughout school we are taught to be patriotic. We are American, we fought the British and won our independence, we're a global powerhouse, fuck yeah. It always felt out of place because everything that was so typically "American" never really settled right, and as I got older and realized that this country was founded on the deaths and mistreatment of black and brown people, I felt less and less connected to my title as "American." But, I'm white, so what else would I be?
We never really stop to think about our roots ur our ancestors. We know that anyone who isnt indigenous had to have had family that immigrated here, but our history books tend to write about that in super vague ways that make it feel as though once they left Europe, our ancestors suddenly weren't immigrants, they were pilgrims, Americans, totally independent of England.
And that isnt true. We all have ties to Europe and to our own individual cultures and histories and customs, and maybe if we started to think about that we'd be a little more understanding when PoC talk about appropriation.
For example, I'm Irish and Swiss, predominantly. Ireland and Switzerland have tons of interesting history, culture, and customs! All of which I am able to participate in freely due to my heritage. I can read the folklore, look into traditional clothing and practices, learn phrases in the native tongues, read their histories, I am able to identify with my roots and not just be American.
Idk where I'm going with this cuz it's like 1am but like...my fellow white people, instead of harassing people of color and stealing and appropriating their customs, holidays, and cultures for "aesthetic" purposes, look into your own. You'll find lots to relate to, and you may even learn more about yourself. Stop hurting others and stripping away their culture and their history for a fashion statement and learn about your own history instead.
It takes 0 dollars to listen to PoC and just....stay in our own lane lmao.
