The case of Sonic Youth showed us that some rock musicians delegate their own instrumentals towards the other discographic parameters, so the fact that U2 put them on a B-side shouldn't be shocking. However, I do ask myself again – why? U2's sonic landscapes could be a great venue for songs without vocals, though I assume they feel they have a reputation to maintain and perhaps they think such enterprises wouldn't suit their standing. Sure, the tune in the link, for instance, does lack Bono's voice, yet you can hear the sonic textures that make them what they are. Moreover, the composition from the mid-80's points to their consequent triumphs, which means they did use this type of ditty as a test of their sound plans.

The Bass Trap

One of my colleagues at work asked me something about audio. "You know about this audiophile stuff right?"

This was a curious question. Yes said I.

"What do you know about bass traps? I was reading up on them and they seem to be easy to build. But the whole thing seems like a black art."

Following my basically cynical outlook I said; "There are many products out there whose purpose is to separate people from their money. They always work to do that, and they may actually help with whatever the problem is. What is the actual problem?"

He said his bass was very boomy and around the room the sound was very different depending on where you sat. I asked what speakers he had. The speakers were old school Koss larger "bookshelf" type and they were sitting on the floor.

I explained that the sitting on the floor was the worst place to put them if they were not designed for that. That boosts the bass a lot. I also explained being close to walls also boosts bass response. I asked about what he was using for an amplifier as low power amplifiers and receivers have a hard time with bass and that can make it muddy too.

He took this in; "what should I do?"

"Easy, put the speakers on some kind of stand for a start. Put them on anything to raise them a foot or more off the floor. See how that works then you can build some nice little platforms with legs or something. That is much simpler than trying to engineer a Bass Trap. Those things have to be rather big to work at all. Simple things first."

He liked the idea. He also said he had a little receiver driving it all, so I suggested upgrading that as it will probably not be able to control the bass driver. At that point his eyes glazed over, not wanting to spend money on electronics. His thing was old cars. Actually cars which are old enough to need a lot of repair, but not yet recognized as collectable by the wider population.

He has something like a dozen 1970s and 80s American Sedans in various states of not working. I said if he sold a couple he could get a really nice system, if he got what he paid for them. From that he recoiled in horror at the idea. He is a "collector" (hoarder) of old iron. He enjoys things that can be worked on with simple hand tools.
