And as a child of summer and sun - born with too much fire - winter is not a season that can go on too long.
Bassey Ikpi, from “Some Days Are Fine”
So this sadness returns quietly. Always quietly. No great trumpeting or horn blast. No drum circle or full-bodied gospel wail. No stunning metaphor or dazzling smile. There is only this throbbing and distant and empty and quiet. Always this white noise of rush and tide. It’s what silence sounds like. Water.
Bassey Ikpi, from “I’m Telling The Truth, But I’m Lying: Essays”, published August, 2019.

Someone once told you, "You always look like you've just been kissed and left." He told you this before anyone had ever covered your mouth with theirs, but so many have kissed and left so many times since then; you wonder if you should find him and ask him to remove the curse.
BASSEY IKPI, I’M TELLING THE TRUTH BUT I’M LYING: ESSAYS
Imagine if you didn’t fit in anywhere, not even in your own head.
[it me, except my metaphor is the being tied to a rocket at the bottom of an ocean]
Literally anything can give me anxiety, from a car that takes a second too long to turn over, the gym at its busiest hour, a doorbell ringing, the refrigerator light—anything.
My voice broke as anxiety attacked every word, so that I sounded the exact level of crazy I would have done anything to avoid.
Bassey Ikpi, from “It Has a Name”
