My relationship with Bast
I grew up in a family that did not participate in any religious or spiritual practices. My mother and father had both had terrible experiences with Christianity. My mother called herself agnostic. My dad wasn't sure what he was, he just wanted to talk about aliens and conspiracy theories. 😂
My aunt was a very religious Christian and I feel like she could tell that I was starved for some kind of spirituality even at a young age and so she tried to impose hers on me. I would say it was well-meaning, but knowing her manipulative and controlling ways, I know that it was not. It's a long story, but later down the road in my teens I actually ended up living with her. As you can imagine, the religion situation got worse from there. I won't go into detail but I will say that like many others I was forced to go to church and to pray at every meal and never felt that I could be myself or express any doubts about Christianity.
In high school I met my best friend, who I am still besties with to this day and probably always will be. She is like my sister. She introduced me to Wicca and Witchcraft. She grew up with a Wiccan mom and her mom's best friend (who is also Wiccan and whom she considers her aunt). I clung to this new religion and wanted to know everything there was to know about it.
This is about the time Bast called to me. I was absolutely drowning in signs from her. She came to me like a mother lion protecting her cub. She was stern at times but mostly loving and extremely patient and forgiving of my mistakes. This was the most exciting spiritual experience I had ever had. Nothing had ever felt this real to me. She was there and I could feel it. She helped me to be strong when I really needed to be. It became clear to me that I was hers and I devoted myself to her.
When my best friend and I turned 18 we started doing rituals at her aunt's house. All the while I had to be a closeted witch with the family I lived with and continue to go to church. I eventually told my mom and dad, and they were fine with it. Their reaction was kind of like, "Ok, yeah? So..?" It was a weight lifted but at the same time, I wish they were more interested or supportive so that I had more people to talk to about it. I was dying to share my passion with others, especially loved ones.
Into my early twenties I had learned quite a bit about Wicca and was slowly growing out of it. I was still missing something. I liked the witchcraft aspect, but I was more focused on the Gods and my relationship with them. I began to focus more on Bast and how the ancient Egyptians worshiped. I started to look into Kemeticism. For awhile I considered it for myself. I just wanted to really be sure to do my research and not commit until I knew it was exactly what I wanted. I am still interested in Kemeticism, I just don't think it's the path for me.
I'm 27 now. Bast continues to show herself to me in little ways. She's in the bond my cats and I share. She's the stray mother cat guiding her kittens across a dangerous path. She's my endless collection of perfume bottles. I think of her a lot. I still feel safe with her and know that I can come to her with anything.
However, I think that over the years we have grown apart a bit. When I started to notice this happening I was distraught and felt lost. Over time I have come to accept that these things happen for one reason or another. Perhaps it was meant to happen. I don't claim to know the mysterious ways of a Goddess, but maybe Bast came to me when I needed help and once I had a handle on things she sent me on my way. Maybe she recognized I was headed for a different path. Whatever the case may be, I am still dedicated to her and will continue to honor her in every way that I can.
Any ideas of ways I can connect with my deity, Bast?
